i ordered one for my mom and i'm going through all the stuff they installed, and they sure did install a ton of useless stuff. I was just going to wipe the hard drive clean, however they decided to not provide me with a windows MCE 2005 disk, so i cannot do anything at all. what should i do? can i call them and demand a disk? or what?

It's a Dell, how do you expect they cut costs quizzelsnatch?

Demand the disk as you paid for the OS as well. It's perfectly legal for you to demand this.

You pay for a license of Win MCE, not a disc of it Jon855 🙂

That was almost yoda-like, Zim🙂

No, seriously, call them up and ask them for it. They might ask you to pay shipping - tell them they should have shipped it to you in the first place. They usually don't argue.

the service i have recieved from dell is sub-par. being the, "best," OEM computer provider, i would think that they would have a better way of buying and tracking their computers. I never once on their website saw that i had even ordered a computer from them and their links to UPS never brought up my package. Now i have literally 6 gigs of stuff on my computer that is not needed and i can't even get it off without most likely fubaring my computer. sweet.

well if you want to get shady you could always download a bootleg copy of the os and use the serial number on your case. I don't think there is a problem with freely copying the software as long as you have a valid serial number. If so then please delete this post. But seriously. You paid for a licensed copy of the o/s so if you have the cd-key on your machine, then just download a copy and use it (if dell wont send you a cd by mail which i doubt)

Does your dell have a windows sticker on the case with a serial number for the o/s?

yes it does.

Can't you just find an image online, burn it, and use your serial #?

i guess i could... but i'd prefer not to, "pirate," on this computer. even though i guess it's not really pirating...

It's not piracy because you paid for the software. However, for varions reasons including potential security and virus risks, it would be better to try to get Dell to send you a disk before resorting to downloading an ISO for yourself.

When you set up the system you should have a DELL PC recovery icon on the desktop. Open it up and it will give you all the information you require, you have three options for recovery.

1 Normal system restore
2 A integrated DELL Symantec system recovery.
3 Create system restore on CD which is basically windows XP

How Do I Create My Operating System CD using the Dell OS Recovery Utility?

Emailing customer support also works:

Email Customer Service for billing, delivery information or general non-technical issues.

erm, dell stopped providing CDs a little less than a year ago. you can call them and make your demand, but they will charge you $10 for it.

in any event, yes, it is an extra fee now, and you're supposed to opt in for it in order to get one.

Beat me to it...sheesh, you'd think people would get this by now.

I just got a 9300 and it didn't come with any discs, only an AOL one. I emailed them that I ordered a backup disc of the OS in my config. They responded with the PC Recovery crap. Told them i'll just send back a $1930 laptop, all the discs included the backup Windows MCE showed up in 2 days 🙂

Or, you could've just ticked the $10 OS CD option when ordering your computer.

not true at all. i have uninstalled that stuff from dell computers many times and not done anything bad to the dell pc.

as they say, there are definitely more user errors than there are pc errors.

Yeah, BUT, it's a crap option when you used to NOT have to PAY extra to get the damn OS CD. You are paying that much for it, it should come with it anyway. Anything to nickle and dime you to death. :disgust:

No worries....Dell usually doesn't install crap that you can't remove via add/remove programs. I've found their installations pretty decent compared to the compaqs I used to deal with in the 98/ME era. Just remove what you don't think she'll use and clean it up that way.

Am I missing something here?
The Dell software allows you to MAKE your own OS CD. I'd rather make my own than pay $10.

That's how companies get stuff for cheaper is by not having to provide media. That's why it's an option for you to request the media if you really want it. I'd jsut download a copy and use your valid key. There's nothing illegal about that.

Might be easier to just go through and uninstall the extra crap they put on there rather than start from scratch. Your parents won't care if there's some extra stuff on there anyway...
