I just realized I *can* get a Tivo or Replay TV!!

I thought I couldn't because my TV is not near a phone outlet. But I see these devices out there that can plug into a power outlet and turn it into a phone outlet! So now I'm trying to decide which one is better! Tivo or Replay TV?

Do they both have equivalent picture quality? I guess Tivo has the better user interface but Replay is better for those who want to archive/burn shows to CD/DVD?

It's also FAR easier to add the ReplayTV to your home network. You have to pay a fair amount of money to do it with a Tivo but it's built in to the ReplayTV units.

I've heard very bad things about those things that run a phone line off your electrical wiring. You might want to make sure you can get a good modem connection with that before you sign up for TiVO. If you still need a phone line for TiVO, what the heck are they broadcasting on channel 35 (on my cable system) at like 2 in the morning? It's obviously some sort of data stream, I always figured it was the week's listings.

I've had both, I'm currently running a ReplayTV. ReplayV to me seems extremely slow changing channels. The Tivo interface is much nicer and easier to work with. BUT I like the fact that I can share missed shows (only available on 40xx and 50xx series) and it's really easy to download shows and put them onto a DVD with the replay

Replay, for the before mentioned reasons.

Dvarchive
Sharing shows
TCP/IP connection, no phone line/ld calls for the guide/updates

You can find them for $100 or so for the 40 hr unit, which is all you need with DVarchive.

Umm, I got TIVO using a wireless usb nic. Works great.

It's pretty close, but the ReplayTV definitely has the better picture quality. Whether or not you can tell may have to do with your display device.

StormRider,

I'll make it easy for you:

1) If you have or plan on getting DirecTV Satellite, get DirecTIVO. It kicks ass.

2) Otherwise buy the ReplayTV 5504 which is hard to find.

Replay TV.. I've had both, and the Replay TV is better in my experience. 😛

Basically, Tivo is one long list of the most recent recorded shows and some stuff the Tivo just goes on a whim and records for you. Like, if you record Law and Order, it will record Judge Judy and Judge Mathis for you (ain't that awesome.)

Replay TV organizes all your shows by show... a much better interface if you have like 100 hours+ worth of shows recorded. It's a lot faster to get to what you want.

I dunno how anyone would pick Tivo over replay cause' Replay has the 30second forward/7 second back buttons.. They're the only buttons I ever use to skip commercials.. much faster than FF.

Tivo has the 8 second back button, and there's a remote code to unlock the 30 second forward button.

As I said last time you posted this, Tivo organizes recordings by show and has since a software update almost a year ago.
If you don't like recommendations, don't watch them. I don't. They're all in a recommendations folder and get deleted automatically when you need space.
You can easily unlock 30 sec unlock as another poster mentioned.

Tivo's interface is leaps and bounds beyond ReplayTV's and the remote is the best remote control ever made. Who cares about transferring shows to your PC...it's a nice feature, but do you really have that much time to transfer everything, encode and burn it to DVD?

once they are on your pc you can actually watch them from your replay on your normal tv, the computer will stream it to your replaytv, plus if you need a bigger hard drive just add one to the computer non need to void your warrenty by opening your replay/tivo.

I just turn TIVO recommendations off.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that you can turn it off. I like to leave it on for the occasions when it records something I actually like. Since the reco's are deleted as soon as it needs space, it's not like they retract from the usability of my tivo.

Leaving it on is a good idea, who cares if it records stuff you don't want. The fact that the recordings are there gives you a great indication of how much space you have left.

I'll second the peanut remote, best remote EVAR.

Right now I'm leaning towards the ReplayTV. I have cable and can't get satellite (because of condo restrictions -- I think).

Is ReplayTV (and Tivo) smart enough to know that Survivor is on tonight (instead of the usual Thursday night) to record the show?

I searched the net and discovered that Tivo is Linux based but I can't find much info on what OS the ReplayTV uses. Is it proprietary? Also, what processor and mpeg2 encoder chips do they use? I'm curious if it's one of the same chips they use on some of the mpeg2 encoder cards (Dazzle, Hauppauge WinTV PVR250, Adaptec Media Center, Creative Labs Digital VCR) that I have.
