Interesting that people are saying that hdmi gives a better picture than component cables.
I know that theoretically transmitting the signal in digital form should give a better picture, but whenever I have done a side by side I prefer the component cables.
Perhaps it is because I was comparing it using hi-def cable boxes and there is something to be gained by allowing the cable box to do the digital to analog conversion? Perhaps they can better tune the outgoing signal than sending a pure digital?

it all depends on whether or not you can 'see' the difference. some people can, some cant. im sure part of it is a placebo type effect as well.

no matter how you transfer your analog signal from box to tv, crap is crap no matter how it gets there. its still going to look poor. for HD channels, this is where some might see a difference.

Why the XBR3 over the XBR2? There's a $300 premium and that's the only reason I didn't grab the XBR3. They are identical panels, but if you read in AVSForums, they say that there is some added circuitry in the XBR3 that makes the picture slightly worse. But who knows. I always thought that you can change the bezel of the XBR2 if yo udon't like it and then tack on the $300, but if not, save that $300. Then again the XBR3 does look a lot better.

That said, be prepared for HORRIBLE SD quality. My 46" XBR2 is great and since my monstrous family room means I need something like an 80" to get proper viewing, I can't really notice the problems of SD since I sit so far away. That said, I know there are a lot of panels that do SD TV a lot better.

Anyways, I have a question about upconverting:

What is the point of an upconverting DVD player? It upconverts your DVDs into 1080p or whatever, but then what? Isn't that the same as letting your LCD panel upconvert?

Is upconverting is kinda like plugging my laptop into my computer and playing a DVD through that because my laptop is already outputting 1920x1080, so the XBR2 doesn't do the work?

You didnt read my post. 😛

We got the XBR3 at the cost of the XBR2 because the XBR2 was out of stock. 😀

That's a slickdeal.. SLICKDEAL INDEED. I wish I could get that. Anyways, congrats to you. Have fun with the set.

Be sure to check out some of the tweak settings at AVSForums or wherever you like to to, as there's plenty of adjustment room for the XBR3

interesting that you were able to get an xbr3 tho - i heard they were in pretty short supply recently. xbr2s have been discontinued i believe.
