Doom never scared me much... there was a game that had me jump out of my seat a few times.... can't remember the title at the moment though... I do remember that while playing the game, I was looking at my character's face in a mirror and a ghostlike character suddenly showed up behind me (in the mirror).... with the 3-D sound... I almost did piss my pants as I spun around in my seat, only to remember I was playing a computer game.

I only remember it because it also scared the crap outta me. It was Clive Barker's Undying. That one was definitely scary but it couldn't hold a candle to System Shock 2. <shiver>

You might still find it in a bargain bin somewhere. I a Doom action combo for 5$ at EB a month ago.

You don't need the original. After reading this post I went and checked it out. You need the doom1.wad file to play jdoom, but you can find doom1.wad on cnet, and then download jdoom.

I must say however, that it's been SOOOOO many years since i've played this game, and it's still hella fun.

Doom rules, I've been playing it for almost a decade, I still love it, the atmosphere it provides will never be duplicated

I love me some Doom, that's fo sho

What a coincidence. Last weekend I installed jDoom with every single enhancement pack I could find. I own all of the old id games and recently decided to run through them again as fast as possible on "I'm too young to die" mode in order to gear up for Doom3 🙂

Ultimate Doom
Doom II
Doom II Plutonia
Doom II TNT
Heretic
Hexen

This is THE first time I've ever been able to completely relive my original experience with a classic game. Whenever I fire up old PC/c64/Amiga games, the nostalgia quickly wears off. But holy $#&! the Doom community has given new life to id's classics!!!

I downloaded most mods from Doomsday which feature:
openGL 1600x1200 6X FSAA trilinear filtering (on a p4@3.0 & 9800pro)
high res textures and detailed monsters
dynamic lighting and coronas
alternate hi-res weapons
3D weapon projectiles with trails
mouselook w/ jump ability
EAX surround sound
and last but not least... a kick-ass REMIX of the original Doom and Doom II music!!!

Seeing Doom run with all of these mods is incredible, especially if you remember what it was like playing on a 486DX/120 back in 93/94. But the remixed music is what puts this game mod over the top... truely amazing! This mod experience is a MUST for anyone that enjoyed the original.

finally someone who sees what i see on my comp 🙂

Sadly Doom does not strike fear into me like Undying, Silent Hill and, most recently, Eternal Darkness. When the walls start bleeding in Eternal Darkness, I have to stop for a second and look around.

What does Doom have? Well, the best coop experience that I've ever played. You and your friend could play Doom together and the majority of the levels worked flawlessly. Now a days, most games end up cutting coop out because the game triggers all break with more than 1 person.

Doom had some amazing level designs. They didn't make sense, but they were more like the designs of levels that you would expect in a puzzle game. Lots of platforms that dropped and raised / invisible monsters / ressurecting monsters / walkthrough walls. Levels were just extremely fun to navigate and havn't really been that way in quite awhile. I highly doubt Doom3 will have the type of non-sensical levels that Doom1 and 2 had.... which in a way will be unfortunate.

Doom was also the daddy mac of the mods. More mods than you could shake a stick at.

Cyber Demons were scary. But not in a scary manner like the monsters they make these days. Cyber Demons were scary because they could only go to certain rooms. Because they were too big to fit else where. It is unlikely in games these days to have an enemy that is very big and blocks passage without it being some sort of boss. Many a times I would find myself trapped in a small area, listening to the Cyber Demon roar and the rockets hitting nearby. I had to really think it over before I just ran out and attacked the demon. Of course, I was young at the time, didn't use a mouse, and it was the first fps I ever played. But I think there was something to demons which just made them that much cooler than monsters these days.

I talked to a lady and she told me she was putting some organs in a stew for dinner and then laughed maniacly. So I cut her and then my guy screamed and said what am I doing?! I leave the room and then next thing I know, I'm walking on the cieling and then my guy screams again. Then, I reload my gun and it explodes in my face while reloading it. My guy was freaking.

Ah god, Eternal Darkness is insane 🙂.

No game hit me like Q1 did...

The first time I played it was a machine at work: P200 with 64m ram, a Matrox Milennium and a VooDoo1 running GLQuake displaying on a 22" Mac monitor.

OMFG!

Of course, that was an insane system at the time. But I was hooked. 😀

I remember when I had my old P200 and went out and bought a Monster 3D PCI card and started using 3DFX for Quake/Quakeworld. What a difference that made. Havn't played anything in software mode since.
Every now and then I miss playing QW Clan Arena. Red team, gold shirt, rocket launcher in my hand. 🙁
