I just played some jdoom (doom with new purty rendering engine) and I just realized my heart was beating so fast, getting scared by massive satanic monsters in dark depths of hell. As I played more and more I realized there're no other games like it so far. Lemme state the reasons why.
1. Truely satanic experience: Do you remember the decals and graphics on the walls? Gutted corpses hanging on chains, a floating eye staring at you and demonic midi soundtracks. Don't forget the monsters scare the sh|t out of you. I look back and I deeply realize that no other monsters in the history of FPS got me that nervous just facing them. (Half Life, Quake, Serious Sam etc got Nothing on this game!) Hovering red cacodemons, hell barons and the petrifying cyber demon and don't forget the giant spider with the sugically implemented chain gun.
All this comes together to create a truly believable world of hell, you really feel like you're the only one in the hell, pitted against millions of demons that are out to get you.
2. Adrenaline pumping effects: if you actually sit down and think, you'll notice that the game was very well thought-out within the seemingly mindless slaughter frenzy. Do you remember getting Beserk? How your vision becomes crimson with bloodlust and you can kill anything with one punch! Those are the monsters you'd want to stay away at all times but you know when you get that item, it's as if though you are really on a nothing-to-lose postal. What about getting hit by a rocket from a Cyberdemon? Your vision gets bloody red with excruciating pain that you can't see anything for a couple of seconds... All these add up to a very innovative gameplay.
3. Serious Sam's got nothing: When I played Serious Sam with the same expectations, I was very dissapointed. (although it was fun in its own way) Sure, killing hordes of monsters were reminescent of Doom but it didn't live up to it at all. The levels were way too outdoory and too bright, and none of them had the "holy motherfvcker b|atch GOD DAMMIT that was scary!!" factor. You don't get that adrenaline mindset either. Something was amiss that was present in Doom...
I'm just posting this to reminds you guys of this amazing game once again and truly remember how great it was in the gameplay in itself, not just as the first FPS that started it all (although technically Wolf was.)
As for Doom III, I don't like where its going in terms of directions. The game looks too Resident Evil-ish with boo-and-surprise effects. It doesn't (seem to) have the constant demonic bloodlusted ambience that Doom possessed....
