I just noticed this: cooler fan on Creative GeForce2 GTS is not quiet!

I tried unplugging it from the connector on the PCB, and it reduced the noise produced from the case!

Now, I know why Leo V wants to buy a fanless GeForce2 MX. 🙂

Is there any way to make it quiet?

Put a decent sized heatsink on it with no fan. Or if you're not willing to risk that, buy a Blue Orb & under-volt it to 7V. That's what I planned to do with my Blue Orb, until it killed my GF2.

Viper GTS: It killed your GF2? How did that happen? One of the unforeseen risks with undervolting?

<<Put a decent sized heatsink on it with no fan>>

That's what I want to do, but I can't find a good and reliable heatsink to replace the original one. I do overclock my card but not the core, I just overclock the memory clock to 375. So, it shouldn't be a problem to run the video card with a no fan heatsink.

I'll see what I can do.

How did it happen Viper? Overclocking?

I have to brush the crap out of the fan on my CL GeForce 2 GTS every now and again. I get strange artefacts in 2D at 380MHz for the RAM.....🙁 Might go and look for RAMsinks soon. :Q

Blorb is not an option for me. It blocks one PCI slot, and it uses a 3 pin molex connector.

How to under-volt it to 7V Viper?

There are a couple of shops there that specialise in selling heatsinks, fans, coolers, orbs and stuff. Should be able to find some good heat spreaders there.

My Blue Orb was defective, I think... It vibrated more than it should have. I left it running for three days after installing it, when I came back the GF2 no longer worked.

As for under-volting, you basically connect the +5 & +12 volt wires to it. +5 to the negative side, +12 to the positive side I believe is how it goes. The result is 7V, slightly less airflow, & a much quieter fan.

If you do some searching, there are threads here with much more detailed instructions on how to do it.

I'm sorry for what happened to your GTS, Viper. Did you get a replacement or something? Or you bought a new one?

I'd be surprised if it really made a material difference though. I have my power supply, CDROMs, processor fan and hard drives to contend with as well, so overall it does not make that much difference to me.....although I do admit my system sounds like an aircraft taking off....😕

I bought 8 1.4in x 1.4in heatsinks for my Creative GeForce2 GTS along with 3M thermal glue (is that how we call it?) for less than US$ 3. They are green in color. I think it really cools down the RAM, they are pretty hot when I touched them after running QuakeIII for few minutes.

The sinks helped cooling down the RAMs but they don't help "much" on overclocking the RAM. I used to get artifacts when I run it above 385MHZ.

I just run UT and Quake III for a few minutes at 390MHz, and it was stable/no artifacts. This is the number I never achived before.

So I think the RAM sinks I bought helped a little bit.

I just read the old Anandtech GeForce2 GTS roundup, and Mike said that RAM sinks doesn't really help on overclocking. Maybe he's right.

Consider this:
Well, the RAM sinks found in Hercules cards are very small and thin compared to the one I bought. Mine is "wing fin" 1.4 inch x 1.4 inch x 0.27 in (350mm x 350mm x 60 mm). It's almost as big as southbridge heatsink on my MSI K7TPro2, it's taller)
