Beckley, WV

Been here a couple of weeks, and coming from the San Fran Bay area I've discovered at least one advantage of this area. I just bought my home for $19k (not a typo). I looked at a few dozen houses the last couple of weeks and I thought I'd be happy buying in the $50k range but I got lucky with a place not placed on the market yet.

Seeing as how my monthly payment is going to be around $120, what should I do in the area with the extra time and money I'll have? My income hasn't decreased as I make it telecommuting.

Degree of difficulty: I don't like OxyContin and I don't have any cousins, however it appears the local girls are willing to do just about anything for $5 an hour.

Why do you need our help?
Unless they look like they could be worth only $5/hr

Right, a porn producing mogul was one of my thoughts, to bring the industry to low income US areas and take it away from the current low income Ukrainian towns.

As much as it is maligned it is a beautiful state. If you are into outdoor activities there are tons of parks for you to explore.

Another good choice. White water rafting I might be into, anybody have any experience? I've never skied, but that apparently is big here also.

I went White water rafting down the Gauley a couple October's ago, it was simply amazing. West Virginia, while hickish, is one of the most beautiful states I have ever been in. Take advantage of the underdevolped area.

The New River gorge is supposed to be great for whitewater rafting, Seneca Rocks for climbing, and Canaan Valley for skiing. If you want to see some northern Canadian type climate and plant life Dolly Sods wilderness area is about an hour or so from you.

Take your pick:

A. Mine coal
B. Run moonshine
C. Shoot stuff
D. All of the above

Oh, and pics of $19k house. Bonus points for pic of hot local chick sitting on your porch (I'm sure you have a porch) flashing the $5 you paid her.

Take control of the internet bandwidth around you and host a sh!t load of servers. That should be entertaining and rake in some dough.

Get some oxycontins and mail them up here.
Then buy a pickup truck with a gun rack and drive around the hills.
Drink 27 piss warm, awful beers and fight a cop when he pulls you over for drinking and driving.
If you have a wife, show her whos boss.

I've actually been offered it a few times already, and i thought it was a stereotype. The good ol boy nextdoor has capsules and these little bottles of liquid Oxy with a dropper he squirts under his tongue, the pills are best snorted apparently, but I haven't tried it. Expensive stuff legally though, he has a script (I don't know how many pills it is) for $800 a month. He claims he could sell them all for $1200 a month but unfortunately he likes them too much himself. We all have our quandries.

The city where my fiance is from here in Kentucky is a big drug town, not unlike what you've mentioned here. Her first cousin is so bad doped up on oxy and meth that he frequently steals from family to get his fix. I think he's in jail right now because he broke into his aunt's house and stole some stuff, not to mention a year ago when he broke in the future father-in-law's storage shed and stole a crap-load worth of Snap-On tools. Plus, my fiance's best friend in high school OD'd on oxy about 5 years ago at the young age of 20 or so.

It's a pretty sad story in a lot of these small towns, where there's nothing to for teens to do but drugs and misbehave. It's not just the teens, either.

I've seen signs for the Tamarack but haven't been, is it an arts and crap kind of place?

Yeah, bunch of old artsy fartsy stuff... mostly Native American portraits and stuff which are ridiculously overpriced.

I talked to a few of the local mid 20s guys and that's the reason they gave for being hooked on whatever it is they're on, that there's nothing else to do. Obviously that's not true, but for the non outdoors type it can be hard to get them out of the house in small rural towns. As I have some money to throw around, any businesses you can think of that I could start to occupy these guys' time? I remember those community rec centers in the 70s wound up getting phased out as they were overrun by drugs and gangs, does anything like that ever work?

Come to the Rainelle/Quinwood area (about 40 mins away) and see me! :D I'm bored as hell so...:p Just be careful, Beckley can be a bit rough compared with my part of the state.

crazy stuff

I just moved to Charleston, WV

Tamarack is good if you liked overprices (albiet "neat") crafty stuff...it's all locally handmade so it's $westvirginia :)
I really dig the Charleston area, the house was cheap as well and the job's good so I'm pleased. I won't stay here more than 4-5 years probably, but it's a start!

There are plenty of things that could be started up, and whether they'd work remains to be seen. Honestly, I don't think one establishment would do the trick, as that's asking too much. But a nice neighborhood place where teens can hang out and have a good time is a great start.

Being from a small eastern KY town myself, some of the things I would've liked to see, and some of the things that were often talked about:
  • Bowling alley with arcade, snack bar.
  • A-typical rec center, with a couple of courts, not just one. Couple of pool tables and ping-pong maybe as well.
  • A simple hang-out, look-a-like bar type atmosphere geared towards teens. Pool tables, dart boards, jukebox and the like.
The biggest work involved in doing anything like this is to make sure the drugs and violence stay out of and away from the establishment. You'd want to provide an oasis of sorts, not a dealing spot. It should be a place for anyone to get away and have a good time.

If you decide to do something along this route, I greatly applaud you, and you'd being doing a great service to the community if done right. Not sure if you'd be looking at mass profits, but the feel-good aspect should be tremendous.

Now that I "know" someone in West Virginia, could you possibly answer a question that's been nagging me?

When a couple in West Virginia get divorced, are they still brother and sister?

:D

stereotypes really are proven false in Charleston
I guess it's the capital city so there's less poverty/hickness than in more remote parts
