I guess it's the capital city so there's less poverty/hickness than in more remote parts

We drove through WV this past January and I have to say it had a lot of neat scenery. The freeway that passes through Charleston and around the river was quite interesting.

I looked at a few dozen houses the last couple of weeks and I thought I'd be happy buying in the $50k range but I got lucky with a place not placed on the market yet.

Seeing as how my monthly payment is going to be around $120, what should I do in the area with the extra time and money I'll have? My income hasn't decreased as I make it telecommuting.

Degree of difficulty: I don't like OxyContin and I don't have any cousins, however it appears the local girls are willing to do just about anything for $5 an hour.

so you would only need .014 cents to do whatever you need to do eh?

I've actually been offered it a few times already, and i thought it was a stereotype. The good ol boy nextdoor has capsules and these little bottles of liquid Oxy with a dropper he squirts under his tongue, the pills are best snorted apparently, but I haven't tried it. Expensive stuff legally though, he has a script (I don't know how many pills it is) for $800 a month. He claims he could sell them all for $1200 a month but unfortunately he likes them too much himself. We all have our quandries.
The city where my fiance is from here in Kentucky is a big drug town, not unlike what you've mentioned here. Her first cousin is so bad doped up on oxy and meth that he frequently steals from family to get his fix. I think he's in jail right now because he broke into his aunt's house and stole some stuff, not to mention a year ago when he broke in the future father-in-law's storage shed and stole a crap-load worth of Snap-On tools. Plus, my fiance's best friend in high school OD'd on oxy about 5 years ago at the young age of 20 or so.

I lived for a while in a small town in western MA...same issue. It's not that we were BAD kids, it's just that there's NOTHING to do...the nearest movie theater and mall were 40 minutes away....

It's a pretty sad story in a lot of these small towns, where there's nothing to for teens to do but drugs and misbehave. It's not just the teens, either.

I talked to a few of the local mid 20s guys and that's the reason they gave for being hooked on whatever it is they're on, that there's nothing else to do. Obviously that's not true, but for the non outdoors type it can be hard to get them out of the house in small rural towns. As I have some money to throw around, any businesses you can think of that I could start to occupy these guys' time? I remember those community rec centers in the 70s wound up getting phased out as they were overrun by drugs and gangs, does anything like that ever work?

its' nice that you want to do something good with the money...what a bout a run& shoot (that's a bunch of basketball courts all next to each other)

run & shoot - might want to word that differently for the hicks or you might end up with something entirely different.

Just curious. Why did you move to a place where you don't know what to do with yourself if you could have moved anywhere and still telecommuted? What made you pick Beckley?

i just can't stop laughing over the thought of buying a house for $19k. 19,000 dollars. less than a new car. that isn't even a down payment in my area.

if you're a city boy and looking for social interaction, you won't find much. if you like outdoors stuff, you have basically the world's largest back yard. hunting, fishing, shooting toilets, 4 wheeling, camping, exploring, you name it. the New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world, and is considered very good white water rafting.

it's all in what you make of it. you could hate it and sit in your $19k house watching TV, or you could take advantage of what WV has to offer over where you used to live.

I live in Huntington, Wv and grew up in Cross Lanes which is just on the outskirts of Charleston. Yes decent houses can actually be bought for $19k here. Little harder in the "big" cities but easy in the smaller ones and rural areas. Even in Huntington there are livable houses for less then $10k. Haven't spent much time in Beckly.

You could take up moutain dancing and huffing lighter fluid like this guy

If you haven't seen that before do watch it. Its awsome. Might give some of you people an idea why $19k houses are actually highend housing in some areas :).

Off topic a bit:

What cell phone carrier do you all use? I'm leaning Alltel since I can get a signal w/o roaming (National Freedom Plan) on the banks of the Outer Banks when I go visit "home".

I'm sure everyone has seen the movie "Wrong Turn". Stay inside and never come out. Inbreds are bound to come around at some point.
