:Q

it was at 9, I was going to wake up at 6:45 and go to the library and continue studying with a friend of mine,
MY ALARM WAS SET RIGHT BUT DIDN'T GO OFF!!!

I'm so freaking out, my study friend called me and told me how EASY it was after it was over!!! I'm freaking out!!!!

I just called him, and sent him an email and this was the email:

Hi Professor, As I said in my phone message, I somehow missed the midterm 2. I have no idea what to do, it wasn't like I was planning on skipping it, if you look at my previous midterm grade, obviously I needed to ace this midterm to help my grade in total, yet not going was probally the biggest mistake of my college career.

Please let me know if I can do anything at all to make it up to you, I really do apologize for this, and I'm willing to do anything to somehow account for myself and what I've learned in the past 8 weeks.

Skoorb did that once! He just waited outside the door of the professor after the midterm and explained the situation to him and was given permission to rewrite it. :)

No it wasn't. You either:

1) Didn't set it
2) Set it for 6:45PM instead of AM
3) Turned it off and fell back asleep.

I did this once. I think that in the end I Just couldn't be bothered to make up a story. I told the prof straight up that I'd somehow slept in through the class (normally I attended, otherwise he'd have told me where to shove it) and forgotten about the midterm or something and he let me retake with a penalty on the grade. I felt lucky.

that sucks :(:(:(

I would go see your professor in person. It's alot harder for them to turn you down when they see the tears in your eyes (you know how to fake tears, right?)

Your alarm went off but you must have had shut it off in your sleep. I do this about everyday and then I have to be woken by my brother to get up. Make it so you have to walk across your room and move it around if necessary.

Done all of those before and slept through my alarm while it went off for 45 minutes.

Missing your midterm sucks, maybe the prof will let you take it if you explain what happened to him/her.

They wouldn't be fake, I have a less than 40% in the class counting homework!

I never sleep through my alarm, and I never turn it off without waking up first. I may go back to sleep, but snooze saves my life!

I've slept through both a test and midterm before, and was able to make up both. For the test, I went up to the professor afterwards and asked if there was any way that I could work on an extra assignment to lessen the blow of the grade I just missed. He asked me if I'd spoken to anyone about the exam already, and when I said no, he took me to his office, gave me a copy, and told the secretary that I'd be retaking it.

As for the midterm, I actually got the date of the test mixed up. Went there the day after it had been given, saw no one around, checked my syllabus, and was like oh hell. I emailed my instructor about it, and he set it up so that I could take it a few days later at his lab.

If you have a decent grade and/or attendance record in the class and have otherwise avoided pissing your professor off, then most of them are willing to work with you somehow. Good luck.

I did that once. On purpose actually, since I would have gotten the same grade no matter what I got on it, so I just decided to get extra sleep.

Go beg and cry to the prof, and pray. If you always attend class otherwise, he'll prob let you retake it with a penalty.

My alarm was set for 10AM today and didn't go off. It's still set right now and it shows 10AM and the alarm is ON. It is possible that something could be wrong with an alarm clock. Get a clue.

You should keep your alarm clock as far from the bed as possilble. When i had 8:10 class last semester id ALWAYs miss it because id just shut the thing off and go back to sleep :frown: Thats why i put it far away so that i would have to get up and shut it off.

I did that once, except I failed to find out until 2 weeks later.

To further drive home the point you care, I suggest you go hunt down your professor ASAP. Even if he isn't in his office, make it a point to go at least contact the secretary and/or whoever to show that you are really serious that you did not miss the test on purpose. Emailing him is really inpersonal and can be mistaken for "oops, I missed a test and I don't care, but you owe me a retake". I hope he doesn't take it like that, but it cannot replace human contact to show the "distress" you are going through.

Good luck.

He's gone until next monday because of the holidays. He didn't even give the exam out.

Even if he is gone, go at least see his secretary and "schedule an appointment". This way, at least the professor knows you tried to make contact ASAP instead of "I'll try to take the test after the holiday since I had more time to study it".

Anyhow, I wish you the best. Yes, it takes guts to approach a professor and to say, I screwed up badly. I hope he can understand your situation.

Sincerely,

Ethan

I vote (3). I've done it before, but never for a midterm!

This is why you have a redundant alarm system. (Alarm clock + Cell Phone or Computer). That way when one fails, you don't have to drop out of college! :)

Good luck!

So you didn't miss the midterm?

It was a different guy.

So you missed one midterm & another did not give a midterm?

Cheers,

Whether the alarm went off or not doesn't matter cause he missed the midterm. I've slept through them too and it sucks but people don't have much sympathy for it.

Cliftonite, I hear ya there man, I have an alarm clock across the room where I have to get up to turn it off and I have one close to me as well set to a different time. If one doesn't get me up, hopefully the other will. On days that I'm worried about getting up I also get someone to give me a wakeup call, or have one of my roommates wake me up. In case you didn't catch it, I'm not a morning person ;)

you made a mistake with the email.

My friend missed a midterm. he then put some tobasco in his eyes and went to see a doctor, saying how sick he is.

He got excused and his final will now count for 90% fo the mark, rather than 60%

Check to see if that prof. has another section at a different time. That's your best shot is to take again then, b/c it makes it simple on both your end and his end. Regardless you absolutely NEED to get in touch with your professor ASAP . E-mail is a good start, a date and timed record of when you realized you missed it is very important as the professor won't think you were just unprepared and blew it off hoping for special consideration later. If you don't get an e-mail back, call him. If you don't get a response, stake out his office as someone mentioned and drop a note.

I had the same situation during my last semester. It was a ghey intro to business apps. level 200 class that taught you how to use M$ Office and format a disk among other things. Needless to say I had a solid A without ever attending a single class. Somehow, I had the times mixed up, it was later in the day than I was used to 4pm but I thought it was 6pm, so I showed up to an empty lecture hall :Q

Anyway, after e-mailing back and forth (he was going to give me a "D" since the midterm was 50%) I finally convinced him that everyone makes mistakes, and that by giving me a "D", this mistake would cost me graduating on time and forcing me to forfeit the job offer I had signed back in September (all true btw). He was a cold-hearted bastad too at first, kept writing stuff like:

"A+F = D That is your grade in the class. "

I finally said that I KNEW he had kids my age at some point, and how he would feel if a simple mistake like this would so adversely affect their futures. I emphasized that I was scheduled to graduate with Honors and already had a strong A in his class, so it wasn't like I was buying time for extra studying. He finally agreed to pass me:

"Your final grade is C. Good luck in the future"

Messed up my GPA some, but I didn't care...he punched my ticket :D
