I've never played a PRS, but I've heard many, and seen many. Nice looking, alright sounding. Heard a '59 Les Paul in person and damn, it sounded like butter. My Epiphone LP with Gibson pickups sounds pretty good too, and definitely great for the money.

Cool you met him though, and it's always great when famous people are still "real".

You should try one out.. and not one that's been sitting out at some BS place like guitar center or sam ash.. go to a reputable dealer and play one that's not been detuned to drop D for the 1000x time and the action is all fvcked, etc.

I don't get some of the comments I read about how they sound 'terrible' or 'alright' but I mean to each their own I guess.

Play it through a real tube amp, a tiny combo with some balls to it. You'll hear what newer Gibson and Fender guitars can never acheive.

Awesome! Really cool thing to happen! I met Chet Atkins in a guitar store once, and he was pretty much the same way.

I think alot of the complaints come because PRS guitars are the guitar of choice for hotshot pissant richkids who really don't know what they're doing.

there's alot of "OMG I have a PRS I'm cool it sounds awesome" type people. not that there aren't awesome guitarists who've done their research and get great sound out of them, they just get outweighed by the dregs.

That's cool that you went to NAMM. I'm hoping to go when it rolls back in. I would have loved to demo a the new Peavey Penta.

I don't know if it's really worth $3,500+ (and you though Video Cards were expensive!) but the few PRS's I have had the chance to put my paws on are some of the best sounding, smoothest playing guitars out there...I really wish I had one.

I also like how they don't feel as bulky as Les Pauls. I've never really felt comfortable with them, but I could sure as hell live with one of these babies.

I'm a LP guy myself. I like the weight...gives me something to hold on to :) The Gibson extra wide fretboards seem to fit my long fingers better than what PRS uses, so the LP is a better fit for me. Like I've said a thousand times though: you have to play what fits you. It's like you don't choose your guitar, the guitar chooses you. (At least that's how they are in Soviet Russia :D )

What forums does PRS get bashed in besides this one?

The player makes the guitar. EVH started with a piece of crap and had a great sound. The key was the guitar fit him. My favorite so far is my '88 Fender HM Strat just because I like the way it feels. And, you're not going to believe this, but my sound is basically the same no matter what guitar I play. It's MY sound.

There ya go! I remember a story about one of my favorite guitarists Dick Rosmini:

"So, after the show, I go back to the dressing room, and a man named Dick Rosmini walks in and introduces himself. He had a record of acoustic solo pieces in 1964 called Adventures for 12-String, 6-String, and Banjo that I really liked. So I fall down and immediately start to say things like, ?Yeah I really sucked tonight? and ?I wish I had my guitars.?

Then, Dick sits down and says, ?Let me look at that guitar.? He played it, and it sounded perfect. Now I was really confused. He looked up at me and said, ?See, if you know how to play, it doesn?t matter what guitar you?re playing,? and then he left. He was right. You should be able to play anything, but that doesn?t mean it will be a pleasant experience."

Ever played one of the Custom series guitars? They have a wide-fat carve on the neck that I tend to prefer as well (I'm with you on the fretboard).
