i just locked myself out of my computer... how to get password for win2k server?

long story short, i accidentally changed my admin password on my win2k server machine, and i have no idea what it is. i've tried any combination i can think of, but it got me no where. anyone know how i can bypass it? i really don't want to have to do a fresh install

awesome little util. my bossed fvcked up (forgot a dean's w2k password.... but insisted i changed it)... blamed me... and this saved me ass.

that program can't find the right path in my registry to edit the password i don't know enough about it to tell it manually. thanks for the idea though

hm it was searching Windows instead of winnt, might have done the trick

edit: nope, on trying to log on it said it couldn't log me on to the network. at least it didn't say the password was wrong... weird

Try c:\winnt\system32, I can't remember if the SAM is in there by default...

Is it FAT 16/32 or NTFS?

If it is FAT 16/32, you can delete the SAM.* folder to get back in. If it is NTFS, it will cost you some $ for a crack.

i remember i had a similar problem with the util. i skipped or neglected one step and it ruined the wole process. make sure u follow the instructions very precisely. but here is an easier, but less flexible approach. u using fat or ntfs? if u using fat... then boot with a bootable floppy. browse to the "sam" file. just rename it, delete it, whatever. just get rid of it. when win2000 reboots, it will recreate the sam file. the admin password will be blank. all other passwords will be gone too tho.

In theory though, if you are running NTFS, could you install a new drive with a new copy of Win2K and access the SAM on the old drive? Just curious.
