FWIW, having non-venoumous species around is a good thing. Some of them (king snakes come to mind) eat the venoumous species. And all of them eat rodents which is good in itself, but also makes it less likely that less desirables will move in.

My father was saved from a copperhead bite by the face of his wristwatch. He was laying on his stomach reaching down into a drainage ditch on a construction site, and was by himself at the time. He heard a noise, looked up, and the snake was coiled in the ditch just a couple of feet from him. Dad stayed still as long as he could, and finally the snake uncoiled and started to go the other direction. Dad took the chance to move, and right then the snake turned and struck. Dad put his arm in front of his face to defend himself, and the snake bounced off the face of his Timex.

After a 1 1/2 hour drive home, he was still shaking.

/also a Rikki Tiki Tavi fan when I was a kid.

Yes, I can see how it'd be a shock. But there's really nothing to worry about. I've found copperheads to be more docile than many non-venomous snakes, and very rarely get confrontational even when being bothered. There are no recorded deaths from copperheads in my state (Missouri), and there are a LOT of them. The AAPCC has recorded no deaths from copperheads since their first report (1983.) In fact, I'm not having any luck finding a verified death from copperhead venom, although I'm sure it exists.

That said, they certainly do affect my pulse, and I tend to kill any I see, especially if there's kids around... :)

I didn't relish killing him, I just had no other alternative. I love animals, but when one is capable of killing me, my wife, or my neighbors with a single bite, hr's gotta go.

no-one dies from snake bite these dayz.

a quit trip to hospital to get the anti-venom, and you're fine.

poor snakey :(

If it's a choice between my family's safety and the life of a snake, I guess I'm having snake stew.
I hear it tastes like chicken! :)

Oh, also... A friend of mine was bitten a few years ago while walking in some weeds. He didn't realize it until he got home a while later and his leg started swelling, I guess the denim he was wearing must have absorbed most of the impact of the fangs. He put an activated charcoal poultice on the wound, to help draw the poison out. It did make him feel under the weather for a couple days... Light fever, mostly symptoms of the flu. No real cause for alarm.

For what it's worth, sucking your blood out of the wound immediately after a snakebite and swallowing it can be a lifesaver in a pinch. Not something I'd do if bitten by a copperhead, even without ready medical assistance, considering I'd be quite adverse to cutting my own leg and drinking my blood... But I'd certainly do it in a pinch if the stakes were high, like with a red coral snake or viper ;)

Dammit! Here I was, laughing at all the little girly-men for being afraid of a little snake, then you had to go and post that.

*shudder*
What kind of marinade would go good with something like that?

:p
Gasoline and lighter fluid. Also, be sure to tenderize it with a large shovel for 15-20 minutes.

Actually, it would probably grab the shovel out of your hand and beat *you* with it!

Does it matter?

Heh. I glimpsed a spider out of the corner of my eye while I was working outside last year, so I instinctively stomped on it. I was wearing my work boots - steel toe, size 11 ( that's right ladies, 11.. ;) ) Anyway, I looked down to see all eight legs sticking out about an inch all the way around from under my boot... and they were all still moving. I had no idea what to do. I only weigh ~130lbs and had my full weight on that one foot. I was sure he was going to flex and run off with me on his back. :p

I ended up just twisting around until something "popped." It looked like some sort of tarantuala, with a very hard, shell-like body.
