Welcome!

If you have any questions on how to get your system crunching as efficiently as possible, this is the place to ask.

Welcome afropick! Glad to have you on the TeAm.

Question: Is KC BBQ really the best?

BTW: Nice computers! You should be good for 5 to 7 WUs per day!

WELCOME Afropick, great to have you aboard!
So do you run the screen saver client or the command line client?
Nice Rigs!

Hey guys, thanks for the nice welcome. :)

I'm running SETI on the 800MHz Duron box. I've done a total of 18 WU's since I started running SETI on June 4th. I joined the TeAm today, and I'm averaging about 1 WU per 11 hours.

I'm using the graphical screen-saver client. :(
Sometimes I like to look at it.

I don't have it running on the main rig (the 1Ghz), because I use it so much for other stuff and I was scared of how much it would slow it down. The Duron box is mainly running SETI. I plan on using it as a small ftp and web server, but I doubt it'll get very much traffic.

I also have an old Pentium 133 that I don't use. Will it even be worth it to throw Linux on it and run the CLI client of SETI?

Welcome to the team afropick. Try seti on the 1 GIG and see what happens, you can allways turn it off when doing other stuff. And then turn it back on before going to bed, letting it run overnite. Again, welcome to the Team.

I used to worry about Seti slowing down my main 1.05Ghz P3 box, but after running it 24/7 for a year, I can say that it doesn't noticeably slow down anything. I even play all my games and such with it running. The only difference I can see is a <1-0.5% decrease in benchmarks, but even that is rare and can be attributed to slight changes in the system's resources etc.

Now I'm refering to the CLI client, the GUI might slow your rig down just a tad because the graphics actually take more processing power to calculate than the number crunching!

You can always turn it off if you do 'serious stuff' though. :)

SETI will be fine when you're just surfing the net with it.

The only occasional problems I have had is when running SETI whilst playing games (on 700-800 MHz PC's),watching VCD's-DVD's.In these situations it causes occasional pausing so I turn it off.
BTW I have burnt CD's no probs whilst SETI is running:).
Naturally running SETI alongside another cpu intensive program doesn't do your WU times any favours!.
1 other problem I've noticed is trying to defrag the drive that SETI is on, SETI needs to be switched off or it just keeps resetting!

You know you want to run SETI on that nice 1Ghz you have!;)
