Okay...my sound does NOT work!

I have an Aureal Superquad and I know they didn't have really any drivers for W2k before they went out of business, but I found some beta drivers (which were a bitch and a half to install- mostly done manually).

Any advice?!

The bootup sounds plays (most of it at least) when windows starts, but that all...no more sound after that!

Also, is there supposed to be a shadow of the mouse and hourglass?

Is there anything like msconfig? I want to disable some startup items.

Thanks guys...I'm up a very large creek at the moment...

Yep, you can disable it in the mouse properties.

As for msconfig, I haven't found an equivalent program as of yet, unfortunately. :(

Have you tried using some sort of generic sound card driver for your sound card? Ya never know..

If you can find MSConfig from WindowsXP you can use it on Win2k as thats what ive done. As for the sound problem i dont know since ive got a SBLive.

The best sound card for W2K is the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz IMO. Great sound and drivers are perfect.

No working drivers for Win2k = Trouble.

If you want to disable a startup program, do it from the registry (HKEY_Local machine\software\Microsoft\Windows\current version\run or run once (typing from memory, might be a bit different)).

Yeah i'm selling my Acoustic Edge to buy a Game Theater XP cause the sound is HORRIBLE on Win2k. I get scratches, random sounds and all sorts of stuff, it's terrible.

It was an excellent card back on Win98 though.

I had a vortex card but sold it to get a SB 128 value. Vortex has no win2k support.
When I had my vortex it sort of worked in win2k but would quit, when it did work it would crackle if something else tried to use the processor that it was sucking on so hard.

You can try this site but when I installed the drivers from their they still didn't work. I sold mine on egay for $20.

Try this if you want

Thanks guys! :)

Okay...now I just have the sound problem! :Q

I'm trying the vortexofsound site's drivers. <crossing fingers>

Ugh...the other drivers don't work either- they're even missing a file. Now it doesn't even have the drivers installed at all. =(

I think it's time to bid this sound card good bye...not future proof- for my needs anyway.

Oh man...I thought I had the sound working (I uninstalled the drivers and installed the ones that come with w2k) and it was dinging and everything and then I rebooted and it was working for like 30 seconds...and then 4 seconds into an MP3...it stopped again! AHHHH!

Wow...no way that I'm buying the hercules gametheatre XP...120 bucks for a sound card? I think not. :p It's not that important to me.

I'm thinking SBLive!Value. :(

I wish my superquad worked...

You can get the aureal vortex cards to work in win2k. Both me and my roomate play sound fine, there is a fix for it for the sound cutting off. :)

Any idea where I can get that fix?

Oh...great, my printer won't work either (just tried to isntall it for the last 20 minutes). One of the reason's I reinstalled windows (had WinME) was cuz my printer wasn't working at all. Like it was detected, but everytime I would try and print there would be a "connection error." :|

Zippy go to the OS forum, or Technical support...I read a thread there on Aureal and W2K, so I am sure someone there has the info you need. Since you have been here a 100 times longer than me I bet you know that already.

Also, as far as SB Live!..it works flawlessly for me on W2K.

YES! I got the sound working! :D

Did a lil search (thanks hans ;) I was losing my head and being rash and not following a logical process :)) and found this thread, which lead me to this site.

It's all good now!

But my printer is still fubared...:(

What the heck? Should I try using a USB cable (i have one from my speakers that I don't use)? Yeah...I'll try that. I'm wondering if there is a problem with my parallel port cable.

Hmmm...USB is a lil better. Ummm...at least now it realizes that I'm out of color ink (got plenty of black though) and when I try and print something it doesn't give me a connection error...but it just sits there "printing" forever... :(

BTW, the reason I am posting here is because this forum get a lot more traffic and this is my only chance to fix this until thursday night. :(

Only problem with the sounds is it's not as clean sounding. :(

Quite disenchanted at the moment. :(

Feck W2k (at the moment). I just need a perfectly working machine at the moment, I don't need rock solid stability (which I never actually had much of a problem with till WinME got fat and bloated ;)). So I just formatted and reinstalled WinME.

When I get some time in the near future I'll screw around with W2k again.

Thanks for all the help guys. :)
