I always wondered what the appeal of the new versions of office were every few years. At some point you're going to have every feature that you'd possibly want in a word processor and spreadsheet. I'm sure 90% of the people getting this version are only looking at the shiny new visual front end and will still be using it as nothing more than a basic word processor.
The ribbon bar is a fundamental change in the way you use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. It brings many of the options previously hidden in obscure menus to the forefront without being overwhelming. It really is a great way to work.

As with 2003, Outlook gets the best updates. Customizable color categories, to-do bar, quick appointment navigation in the calendar, and most importantly, a kick-ass real time search. Oh yeah, and some pretty new address cards. 😛
Well now you got me excited. I'll have to put it in tonight.

You don't have any issues using it at work even though you're probably frequently sharing files with those using 2003? I'd be afraid to try that.
That's one thing I haven't tried yet. Although in at least word you can save in 97-03 format. Other than Access & PowerPoint, I wouldn't anticipate many problems, honestly, I think doc and xls are pretty locked down at this point. I don't think I've had a compatibility issue since 97->00
Exactly why I can't do this at work yet. I pretty much only use Access. Too afraid of having some perfectly working queries or something on my machine that don't run right at all on others'.

Oh I definitely wouldn't use a new beta version of Access for anything at work! That's why I said I haven't touched it. 😉

All our access stuff is done on a terminal server with 2003, although it's pretty limited, just some custom forms for timekeeping and client network info.

Heh - I linked an account to Passport..went to d/l the beta and it asked me to confirm my email again. It hasn't sent a confirmation email yet..

Haha, same thing happened to me. I was like, when are they gonna send this thing.

Does anyone else have IE7 who can try to download this? I'm curious if the page works for you.

Well I'm getting pissed off. Outlook prompted me to download this Windows Desktop Search Engine thing so I could use the instant search feature. The damn thing won't install because of lack of permissions for registry keys it needs to modify. So far I've been going through and changing the permissions for each subkey manually, I've already done like 10 and it keeps needing more. Who knows how long this could go on for.

Okay it's installed. How do I know when my emails have been indexed? Right now searches for very obvious words return no results.

How many megs is the beta? Just curious. The new menu organization scheme looks similar to Adobe InDesign - makes it real easy to find the tool you're looking for. I think I'm going to stick with Office XP for a few more years though. Plus I really like Thunderbird - just exit Thunderbird and zip up the Thunderbird folder to make a backup, way too nice to switch 🙂

440 MB download, a little under 500 installed.

It's certainly no more difficult with Outlook. Actually easier with the Backup utility.

But my email searches are returning no results. 🙁 I think it's borked.
