AT&T people just finished installation at my home. While the cable outlet is in livingroom. My computer is in bedroom. There is a long distance between the two places. ATT guy took my model out and installed it beside TV. How can I connect it to my computer. They told me I have two choice,

1. But a cat 5 internet cable and connect it to my computer. That may need 100' and cost $30-$40
2. Buy a wireless rounter which may cause around $100-$200

What should I do now? I don't like have such a long wire all the way to bedroom. But the wireless rount is way too expensive. I have motorolla 4100 cable modem. It has both USB port and network card port. I heard there is what is called wireless USB adapter. Can I use that one?

Some suggestions please. What is the best way I should go?

Cat 5 if you want a cable, wireless if you have money. There's really no other choices. The USB wireless adapter is going to be just as expensive as going wireless otherwise.

they should have installed it in the room you wanted, not just put a splitter behind a tv and left it there....

call up AT&T and bitch....

ohh and you don't have DSL.... you have ATTBI, aka a CABLE MODEM

Thanks for the information. I have the free basic installation. the there is no outlet inside bedroom. Do you still think they should install in the room I want? Is there anybody else who has some similar experience?

Thanks a lot.

You can ask them to install an outlet to the bedroom, but It wouldnt be cheap either. Just buy the Cat 5.

If I have to go with cat 5 what is the best place I should go to buy it? It will be a very long one. 🙁

Thanks for the infor.

I saw some components on web but I am not sure whether anyone of them will do the work?

Belkin Wireless Cable/DSL Gateway Router --$ 162.95
Belkin Wireless 802.11b Access Point --$146.95
Wireless 802.11b USB Network Adapter -- $88.95

Like I have mentioned. My cable modem has USB port. Is that ture if I just buy Wireless 802.11b USB Network Adapter I can connect the cable modem to my computer without anyother component?

What is the main difference among these three, especially the first two?

Thanks a lot.

dodo, you can also go to Home Depot and buy CAT 5 there too, it's extremely cheap too, I bought 30 feet for less than $3, but there is a catch, you have to buy all the crimps and the crimper tool. But then you can make your own CAT 5 later down the road too.

I just checked with home depot too! ^_^ While I only checked their website they only show me for Category 5 500' $54. But they do have Category 5e 100' for $14.95. I did not see 30' one. Which local store you bought those cable from?

And anybody know what is the different between Category 5 and Category 5e?

Thanks a lot.

Cat5 is up to 100MHz
Cat5e is up to 350MHz

All you need is cat5. Call up a local computer store and have them make one for you. You can buy premade cables at OD, OM, Wal-Mart, etc. as well.

why dont you just run coax to your room, and then have the cable modem in there as well? then you'd only need 5' of cat5.

coax is dirt cheap too.

I would just run coax to your room so you would have the internet and if not already a place for cable tv. Where is the room located on the second floor? Is it on an outside wall because coax cable can simply run up the side of a house and drill a straight hole through the wall and with a little caulk around the hole, you should be set. I would not want my cable modem to sit next to my tv equipment, pretty weird if you ask me. The cable guys should have run that outlet for you for free with the basic installation because they did it for me.

I also asked cable guys to extend the TV cable. I was told that he can not. There are rules which do not allow him to do so. I am not sure which rule or whether what he said is true. I am living in Condo so Condo Association may not allow to drill a hole on the wall. I just went to my local computer store and get a cat5e around 88' for $15. Now it is up and running. Speed is fine but I have wires everywhere(have not got a chance to attach them to the wall). I hate wires!

Regarding to set another outlet, according to description of basic installation, they will only wire the existing outlet. Sign, don't know whether I should call ATT to complaint about it. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for all your help.

The Home Depot near me and sure of all of them can custom cut them for you, just tell them how many footage you need. But once again you have to crimp it yourself. The only draw back to it.

As far as your other questioning of cable company making it longer, it is true for Time Warner Austin, my brother had the same problem when just adding cable to his room. Not sure of the specifics of it all, but guess about tripping over it or something.

Still not sure if you have DSL or Cable, but my local cable company installed another outlet where I wanted it for $25.

I am sorry I thought I put a wrong title. What I have is cable modem with the service of AT&T.

Anyway I have bought cat5e cable. and It works great though I have to wire it around room.

I have few other questions,

1. I have ECS k7s5a motherboard and I am using its onboard lan. Can I install another network card on it so that I can connect the desktop to my notebook? I am not sure whether two network cards can work together.

2. If I want to have both of them share the internet do I have to buy a router?

3. If I only want to have one online at a time can I just plug the cable to notebook and use it? I am afraid that the MAC code maybe different between my desktop and notebook.

4. My cable modem support USB port so can I use cat5e connect from modem to a NIC/USB adapter and plug it to USB port on my computer? In this way I can use the onboard lan to connect my desktop and notebook together.

In general how people share their ATT cable internet at home? What is the best way to go?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, you can, but a cable router is the way to go.

No, you don't have to, but it would be the best thing for what you are trying to do.

If I only want to have one online at a time can I just plug the cable to notebook and use it? I am afraid that the MAC code maybe different between my desktop and notebook.
They will have different MAC codes, but again a router would take care of that.

If you used the USB on your modem, you would just plug it into a usb port on your PC, and install the software. You can't use the modem to connect the two PC's together though. You would need another lan card in the desktop to do that. Or just get a router.😉

i would simply extend the cable tv line - it would be easier and probably better. you could also put a tv in there later. get a router if you want to share them.
