i have a few questions.

i set my workunits to 50.

now the black dos box keeps on popping up on my screen.

is that normal?

also, i want to have several of my systems run CLI ...can i set each computer up w/this method:

or do i have to do it differently? They are all networked.

If you checked the box to display tranmit then the dos box will pop up everytime it uploads and download results and work units
If you followed Gregs site then you do have the box checked and it will pop up until the cache is filled
 
If they all have access to the 'net then you can set them all up that way or if you want you can use one of your computers to store work units for all of the computers on your network.
SetiQueue or SetiGate will work nicely. I found SETI Gate easier to set up.

I have the CLI/SETI Driver/SETI Spy on all my computers & SETI Gate on my internet connected one. My networked computers are pointed to SETI Gate & get their WU's from there. Then i up/download WU's with SETI Gate to the Berkeley servers.

It's easier for me, being on dial-up access, to "centralize" the process.
 
If you installed SetiDriver as per my sig-line instructions you will only get the DOS screen on the first batch of downloaded WUs. Once that has been done and you have done a re-boot (Display Transmit = Un-checked) you should no longer see the DOS screen during transmits. 🙂

right when my screensaver loads it, it basically slows my system down to a crawl..
i have a screensaver that is a picture slideshow..

is there any way i can fix it so that seti doesn't kick in until 30 after my screensave initializes?
 
Using a screen saver does take a little processing power but if you like it ... what the hell, enjoy yourself a little. 🙂

Now if you are going to have a "crack rack" like I do and you have systems that don't do anything but run SETI, that is a different matter. 😉

When you say your screen-saver "slows my system down to a crawl", how do you know? Obviously for the screen-saver to be deployed the computer has not been used for the period of time you setup as a delay.

I didn't notice in this thread what kind of computer you are using? That may be helpful.

It's my main rig -- p4 2.4ghz, 1gb ram...it's a great system. 🙂

My screensaver is basically a fancy version of the My Pictures Slideshow.

When it initializes, it does a scan of MY PICTURES folder, and then it does a slideshow of all my pictures...

The part where it slows down to a crawl is when the screensaver initializes and does the scan of MY PICTURES folder. Normally, it takes 3 seconds. With SETI on, it takes 3 minutes....

I wish I could have my screensaver go on because i like to watch my pictures on the screen....but if i have to sacrifice that inorder to crunch, i think i will. ;P
 
Hrm, looks like they programmed the directory listing at low priority level, so it's competing with Seti for CPU usage (as Seti uses low priority).

Whenever i'm not using the PC i'm away from it...so the monitor is off anyway! 🙂

OK, now I understand. You are really running an application in conjunction or linked to your screen saver.

Normal screen savers do not use that much of your CPU.

I run a little program on several of my workstations called WEBSHOTS.

They offer a service where you can upload your personal pictures and then use them as one of your collections. Then they would function as a normal screen saver file. I'm not sure if it is a FREE service but you can get a FREE ACCOUNT and try it out. You needn't worry about privacy too much as I just checked and there are currently 49,913,100 photos that people have uploaded using this function. 🙂

Maybe someone here has a better solution but that is what I would suggest. 😉

BTW, I just remembered. I'm using WEBSHOTS on my DELL 400SC which is a 3.2G P4 HT system. Running WEBSHOTS, it still manages to put out 16.42 WUs @ day with an average CPU of 2 hours 48 minutes.

i like my screensaver because it scans MY PICTURES folder each time for new pictures...
and it does a fade and zoom thing, just like the Mac one. 🙂
 
Actually, I don't use the SCREEN SAVER of WEBSHOTS I use only the WALLPAPER function.

You can set it to change your WALLPAPER every 15 minutes. I was a member for a full year and downloaded all of their best stuff. It is really neat to see some of the awesome photos that are available.

But I digress ... this is not exactly what you're looking for. 😉 🙂
