I just got back from a coworkers house. I installed win 98 on a 133mhz pc with 16 megs of ram. And then he wanted me to install a bunch of games. He doesn't speak english and he busts his ass for me so I agreed to set his pc up. I need a beer.

I've had several similar situations like this before, and getting back home to MY workstation is just the greatest feeling in the world. No lame purple chimpanzes, 'AOL 1000000 HOURS FREE!!' icons, random files scattered around the DESKTOP for people who don't know what a hard drive is, rollerball mice that have never been cleaned, "defragment? no, not in 3 years.. what's that?", or most importantly, crappy hardware (EDIT: this is why I'm paid 30 bucks an hour- to deal with this crap). Instead, I come home to a rock solid, stable, high performance, dare I say 'mechanically sexy' machine that I crafted myself out of the highest of quality parts. :)

haha i know what you mean. I know I take a lot of grief for being a 56ker, but my modem is tweaked to the point where I download consistantly above 5k. I've been to friends houses where they download at 3k and are perfectly content with waiting 2 hours for a high quality MP3. I have a friend who has a nice computer, geforce 4, winxp, more powerful then mine, yet runs his resolution in 640x480. I got there and was like what a waste of a graphics card, i can trade my gforce 2 pro for his and he'd never notice :)

But uh, hugging your computer is a little weird. Hardcore ATers get enough grief as it is trying to stray away from the geeky side :)

while i was at work, i was stuck in an office using like a p100 w/16mb ram (if that) and a video card running 256 colors. it was absolutely horrible. it was so slow... when i type a messege on aim... i type a whole sentences... and i see the cursor move... but no letters show up. then like 15 seconds later... boing! it comes up. whats worse... i was browsing ATOT and AT FS/FT.... every time i went to switch between windows... u could hear the hd crawling... crying... it sounded so painful. like it was begging to be throwing out the window. so i can home today... dusted my computer off... wiped the finger prints of the screen... rewired the cables... and swore that i'd throw it in front of a speeding train if it ever performed like that stinking p100.

I've hugged various machines when I got code to compile and run (especially when it converges).

When I get a big project finished, I always treat my machine to a virus scan and a defrag, and maybe a clean windows format.
