yea..you're probably right. I was already worked up because it took him 2 hours to do one page of homework. He knows I get cranky at night.

I use to do that or even worse... was seriously unable to focus on stuff I didn't want to do... not that that's changed. Even had to go to ummm stuff cause of that...

I've already had to talk to him about "gingers" and "fags". You are right that its not racism...its just the groundwork of even more serious things.

Always something with kids....I can't wait to see what his teens brings about.

If he isn't even a teen yet, you are right to send him the message that it isn't okay. If you had just laughed, he'd think it is something adults are all cool with and go tell a teacher in school. Then when the teacher got him in trouble, tell the teacher that his dad laughed at it.

It is good to clearly define what is right and wrong, good and bad. If you don't tell him, there isn't much else that will these days.

Nothing wrong with what you did. Unless you yelled and screamed at him like a raving lunatic.

lol that made me laugh joogle... your son isn't racist, he's got a good sense of humor. He's a teen so he's exposed to that at school ALL THE TIME.

He was doing his homework and was using the handy dandy Google calculator. He finished up his work and said "Dad, look!" He pulled up Joogle. I asked him what it was and he said "Its Google for Jews!"

I freaking hate any kind of racism and gave him a lecture about not being a jackass. I could tell that he really didn't think he had done anything wrong. Granted, it wasn't serious...but better to nip it in the bud right?

Is Joogle no big deal or am I over sensitive?

The site itself says "The Search Engine for Jews". What did you expect?

and on a more serious note - older folks aren't understanding that kids in school these days are actually becoming far less racist, yet using mild and even vulgar racial jokes more and more.

What is happening is kids are just softening up, many disgruntled with the overly PC nature of most conversation these days.
Many of the people taking part in the jokes are ones who, if it weren't in jest, should be offended.

The kids find it acceptable to poke fun with "racial jokes", but the jokes offend only the most prude individuals. Most often, the jokes are directed back and forth amongst the very racial/ethnic groups that are the subject of said jokes. Most reasonably-socialized individuals find no harm nor offense, because apparently unlike parents, kids CAN tell the line between things said in jest and in serious tone.

I'm only 4 years removed from high school.. Jews, Polocks, Mexicans, Indians, East Asians, Blacks... you name it, there were jokes. It never fell out of fashion here in college either. Often at least one individual from said group was involved in the conversation, and poking back at us whenever possible. Us whiteys just have little in the way of stereotype to poke fun at, so it's always localized based on the regional culture - better suited when whites from other regions are involved, than regional cultures get bashed. :D
Are we ever serious? Well, define serious. Stereotypes have an inkling of truth, exaggerated yes, but still present. But are they the subject of hatred or anything of the sort? Nope, just the material for jokes. Most kids aren't acting on these, rather using them as jokes. The younger generations, in essence, are trying to break PC boundaries, as always.

Now, it also depends on location. Some areas are more prone to breeding pure hatred, for whatever reason.
I've been in public schools my whole life, and have experienced quite a bit. I hate certain types of people, and thus, localized cultures (inner city for instance: race never matters there, just the culture - there are many "good" blacks in an inner city environment, and quite a few "thug" whites). Racism will fall away as soon as the PC boundaries crumble and certain antagonizing activities fall out of favor.

I heard Adam Carolla do a bit on "Jew-gle" on a podcast a few months back.
Have him attend a Corporate Sensitivity Meeting with you. That'll learn him a thang or two.

When you repress the humor of race based jokes, all you are left with is the hate that lingers.

Humor takes away the power of hate, but you are growing the seed of hate by shooting fire at it.

Be careful OP, this is a bad path if you intend to be corrective.

And this is good how ? I fail to see how making jokes about anyone based on race is being less racist. Do you watch a lot of south park and family guy ?

Unless you are the target of the humor then it isn't so funny.

It's funny if Jackie Mason had said it...

It's not so funny if Mel Gibson had said it....

\well, maybe it's kinda of funny if Mel Gibson had said it...

If you build a word up as a base of power and hatred then it has power.

If you don't then you take that power away.

Kids using words and phrases and old stereotypes as jokes between themselves are helping to take the power away from these words.

Sure it is. Mel Brooks was always good for Jewish humor. Blazing Saddles is racist to just about every group on earth, and it's funny. People who can't laugh at themselves and others get what they get. Fuck 'em if they're offended, I just don't care.

We should ban all hate speech in ATOT. Next person to say ATOTers live in the basement gets banned forever! These stereotypes must stop!

Imagine getting banned for pushing the greasy nerd stereotype. Right now, that's how confused the OP's son feels.

Did you even read my post?

I argued exactly that point: kids who are the target of these jokes aren't truly offended, and they are 'dishing' it right back with targeted jokes of their own.

Racial jokes among people who know each other are becoming like blond jokes. If someone is offended by a blond joke, I ask they crack their own skull in so I don't have to.
I'm blond, blue eyed, and have polish ancestry.

this. everyone can say things far simpler than I can. :D

Have him stop watching South Park if you're so concerned about it.

Sounds like quite the little cartman :)

Yeah, without a doubt the kid is watching South Park. I don't see how he would know about the term ginger otherwise and use it in a derogatory way.

That kind of thing has a life of it's own. He could have heard it from other people, and never even known where it originally came from.
