I just had an interesting idea

Hi All,

I just had what I think is a good idea, but since there is nothing I can do with it, I want to share it and see if how good/bad of an idea you think it is. Also you can tell me if it already exists.

My idea is to create a .com service, which provides a service for PC games, and networked console games. The idea is to be able to give a game a public place for players to meet. I know some games have their own networks, and places like the MSN gaming zone let people meet and play their games.

But i'm talking a much bigger scope. It would just be a service that would keep track of all the current sessions for each game, and it would just store ip addresses, and maybe have a chat room type web interface.

The ultimate goal hinges on being able to promote a good product and gain widespread acceptance. It could provide an API for game developers to add the option of linking/hosting a game on the public domain, so the user doesn't have to switch to or even have a web browser. This allows for console games that are developed with the proper API to link up. And over time, this could promote cross-platform play of games, both cross OS, and cross console.

I just had this thought, now it seems to me that it would be extremely difficult and require lots of $$$$ to get the bussiness of the ground and promote an open architecture.

Good idea/Bad idea/already been done?

yup. looks like gamespy does it. Do they sell an API to programmers as part of their bussiness?

Anyways, i need to get back in touch with games. This is what I get for only having broadband at work and not at home.

Companies don't have any incentive to build their game with compatibility for your service. Why should they care about other games? And most game companies already have their own interface, ie EA live.
