Maybe things have changed a lot, but to me it's 1 of 2 things:
1) your school isn't as competitive as you think. State universities will know the top schools in state, and have um... special allowance for lower GPAs due to the competitiveness of the schools.
2) your grades are good enough to get in (assuming you're in the 98-99 percentile nationally on your standardized exams (which you are in math.)) but you don't realize it.

I just got done taking

Computational Neural Engineering
Neural Implant Engineering
Physiological Systems Modeling
That's on top of doing research in a lab.

Can't say I'd do it again. I was dazed half the time from the lack of sleep from trying to meet all of its demands. It was embarrassing when I had to talk to a professor.

If I did it again, I'd take energy drinks rather than adderall to get me through the nights. Adderall come down is way worse than energy drinks, and IMO, it's not that much better for getting you through nights of intense projects.
