a early 70s 10hp Mercury outboard. It has been laying in my dads garage for about 20 years, Hopefully we can get it up and running. It will be a nice little motor if we can. Have to find a Carb Kit and water pump kit and see were that takes us.

No boat, but now I need to look for one. I have a boat trailer that will become our camping trailer, but i can put a rack on it to haul about a 14' boat, so gonna have to start looking. This could be cool.
I was thinking I-boats as well, probably ought to do the lower unit to, its been a while since I have done any of that stuff. Will have to see if I remember how. Gonna have to find the serial number as well, and build some sort of little motor stand so I can get it up to work on it.
For the small motors like that a good solid saw horse works good, just make your own attachment...😉
Yes that old the seals are dried out and rotten for sure... All the hoses should be replaced and sad to say but I'd bet the wiring insulation will crumble when you touch it...🙁 Heat shrink tubing works great if you can use it...
So potential bad news, open the hood and it was full of mouse nest, got that cleaned out but the engine doesn't want to shift, nor does the fly wheel want to turn. The pull starter doesn't want to engage either. Tried to take the pull starter off and on of the screws is kinda boogered up and doesn't want to come of, of course its the hard to get at one. of course the wires are bare as well.
Those mercs were a major pita. If you want reliability, look for a 60 on up evinrude or johnson. Built much better than the mercs and more parts available.
So I just had a chance to work on it some more, got the recoil starter off and sprayed some wd-40 into the cylinders and was able spin the engine fairly easily. The tiller doesn't want budge so I will have to tear it apart and it doesn't want to shift. I removed the lower unit thinking something might be jammed up but still won't shift. So I will have to figure that out, BTW its stuck in forward.
