I just got pulled over.

So, I just got pulled over on the freeway, in a 65mph zone. This is how things went:

Officer knocks on passenger window
I roll down the window
officer says "I pulled you over cause you were going a little fast, about 84-86"
I say "I didn't realize I Was going that fast, I know I was over the speed limit, but didn't think I was gonig quite so fast.
officer says "can I see your driver's license?"
I hand him my license.
officer asks "Where you headed tonight?"
I say "I jsut dropped off a friend in Sacramento and I'm headed back to Davis"
Officer asks "Have you had anything to drink tonight?"
I say "Nope."
Officer says "can you do me a favor and follow my finger with your eyes"
he moves his finger, I watch it.
Officer hands me my license and says "Slow down a littlw, and be careful pulling back out into traffic"

That was the whole thing, took 2-3 minutes, tops. That's what I want to praise the CHP for. I've been pulled over by the CHP before: sometimes they've given me a ticket, sometimes (like tonight) they haven't. Either way, they always get straight to the point. They either give your your ticket, or your warning, and send you on your way. I have NEVER been asked to step our of the car by the CHP. I have NEVER had the CHP ask to search my vehicle, which seems pretty common in other states. I was pulled over in Nevada for speeding, and got asked a bunch of bullshit questions for 20 minutes that had nothing to do with my speeding infraction. A friend of mine was recently pulled over in Texas and was stopped for over half an hour while the police did a detailed search of his car. I've never gotten any of this BS from the CHP, and even though I still get kinda pissed when I get a ticket, I'd much rather get it in this kind of a straightforward manner than with a bunch of BS and unwarranted suspicion.

wow, 20 over and he let you off. I guess they have more important things to deal with on the Fourth...

It is nice when they get to the point.

good for you

i actually got a ticket last month but was speeding so i wont bitch about it.
now i drive like an old man - cant afford insurance hike from another one.

On the 4th, there are so many drunks and people trying to shoot cops with roman candles, speeders are the least of their problems.😛

You give the CHP B.S. praise, all because they didn't give you a ticket. Though you said they have in the past, I doubt you wrote a post praising them afterward. The stuff that you mention *shouldn't* normally happen to a person. That's like saying "I praise my mom for feeding me when I was a kid". It's part of their job description. Anything beyond that (ie searching, dumb questions) is just bad cop.

Well, then there are a hell of a lot of bad cops out there.

I got pulled over again tonite on the way home from a party, I guess I cut the cop off at a light. Two cop cars pull me over, he asks why did you cut me off, and I said how did I? He said "You were in the turn lane" and I replied " I swore it wasn't a turning lane". Then he cracked up and said get outta here.

I'm jst saying, if questions like "MInd if I take a look in your car?" and "Who's this person in the passenger seat?" make a bad cop, that makes a lot of bad cops.

the best part about having a BBQ at your house with all the alcohol .....

you don't get pulled over walking from the backyard to your ROOM!

CHHERS!

If anything that'd make a *good* cop. Sounds like sygyzy said "yes" to those questions one too many times. 😛

A lot of times if you say, "Sure" it defuses the situation & allows the officer to consider you're not a threat to public safety.

But people don't realize that by saying "no" the officer can't legally search unless he has another specific reason.

Agreed, but since I don't have anything to hide, I se no reason to give the officer an excuse to look for something to allow the search. Worst I've done recently is pull the radar detector & chunk it in the passenger footwell anyway (& that was a more than a couple of years ago)😀

I'm coming up to the great state of ND this week, gots a family reunion in Bismarck.

same thing happened to me earlier. driving thru the bay bridge to get home and a cop followed me for a mile or so then finally flashed his lights after the end of the bridge. said i was "weaving". I probably did as i was looking at him every few seconds. did the little follow-finger test and let me go. good think i didn't tell him i had two beers, but that was over 4 hour period.
