Here in the US, I'm used to getting approached at gas stations by homeless folks - my job takes me all over Dallas/FW. I have heard just about every story and excuse about money and basically begging.

I simply choose to give at the church and several other legit charities but not these folks.

I just look them right in the eye and say, firmly, " sorry, can't help you". That ends the conversation 90% of the time. If they keep talking, I keep repeating myself until they get it. That's it.

You're in the military, had 3 other buddies from there with you, and you couldn't get a single guy to go away from you and stop bugging you? *sigh* :(

No other country would ever classify us that way. Do you know how the Chinese for Englishman translates - "Hero country person".

It's probably because the US did not suffer too much under the centuries of British genocide like so much of the world did.

Uh, WTF? Whatever you do, don't get off a train/bus in a Third World country or the more aggressive panhandlers will walk away with your clothes and later tell you the material makes their skin itch.

The best way to deal with panhandlers when they try to push something into your hand is, don't close your fingers around the item and do not hold your hand out palm up. If they shove something into your hand then, it will simply fall towards the ground. If it hits the ground and breaks, too bad... that's just their tough luck.

I wouldn't even say conned or bullied. You allowed this individual to bully you. This is what they teach you in the military? How to be a pussy? You're only tough when you're with your military buddies?

The problem is that he WAS with his military buddies.

Hmm, let's see...gee I don't know how about TEA TIME!

 What's wong with tea? I like tea.

The English are historically some of the toughest people around - no one has defeated us on our home soil since Roman times.

emm effin' shens!

Apparently it's true, and American is 'lovely country person' or 'beutiful country person', while Frenchman is 'lawful country person'.

Nice isn't it?

Sort of true. The real reason for the country names is the phonetic similarity. ying guo is england, and they chose a ying with a good meaning. mei guo is the US, the mei chosen means beautiful. Fa guo is france, and so on and so forth. The Chinese have no love for england, don't fool yourself.
Anh Quoc is England in Vietnamese, and it mean Big Brother Country.

I call shen, because the OP can't be such a wuss.

I think it really depends on how accustomed you are to this sort of thing. First time I ran into an aggressive bum, I was scared sh!tless and gave him some money. I was maybe 13 and it was my first time in the city.

A couple of years ago I was on vacation in Mexico and an American scammed me out of like $10. Kept saying how he had all his cash stolen and his Mom was going to western union him cash in the next day but he needed to eat for the night. He was all strung out (shaking and antsy and stuff) but I didn't put all that together until after he was gone. Point being, your first encounter with this sort of thing is usually really awkward and stings your pride afterward. But you learn and deal with it better the next time. It's your empathy (which is a good thing) going too far and making you feel like a chump (which is a bad thing).

Half the people saying 'pussy' wouldn't have handled it perfectly either, or if they would it's because they're accustomed to this sort of thing. People that would handle it well the first time are probably cold-hearted assholes.

If that won't do it start swinging.

OP should check his boxers to see if his balls are still there.

That story was pathetic...

Cold hearted assholes? The guy looked strung out and was trying to sell, what he said, was stolen property. The OP had 3 buddies with him. The OP purchased stolen property not because he had a heart but because he was intimidated. Not to mention that he, and his three buddies, are military!

Not only did he get jacked out of $50 he was intimidated into committing a crime by a bum!
