I just got a XBOX 360 Elite, now what?

I stopped by a Target near my work, and they had one left in stock. I heard they are hard but not impossible to come by in most areas. I was always interested in the 360, but only could only justify it recently.
So I am way behind. I don't even know what it's capable of, and besides the major hits...I don't know what to get.
I picked up a couple of used games, Gun and PGR 3.

Write up what is good to get and read up on for a newbie.
The one thing I know is to start a Xbox live account and this about it. Names some games or accessories that you cannot do without.
thanks!

1) Download demos
2) Download trial Xbox Live Arcade Games
3) Download any free movies/TV shows on Xbox Live Marketplace

From there, decide what you'd like to purchase. Also wouldn't hurt to try a game rental service. Either Gamefly or Blockbuster or something.

Even though it's a launch title, I still think COD2 is the best FPS on the 360.

Gears of War is a must buy if you like shooters.

Both Dirt and Forza are great for racers and are pretty much completely different styles.

I personally don't like RPG's but Oblivion is a must have if you are into those types of games.

Steer clear of any "movie -> game" games because they all suck.

My Favorites so far:

GoW
Dead Rising
Oblivion
GH2
Viva Pinata (it's fun, I swear)
CoD2/3
NFS: MW or Carbon
Hitman Blood Money

Soon to Come:

Halo 3
GTA4
Blue Dragon
Lost Odysey
Mass Effect
Bishock
Assassins Creed

Check out liongames.com for some nice preorder prices on Bioshock, GTA4, Mass Effect and Halo 3.

I second Call of Duty 2. The online portion sucks, but the single player is incredible. Also, at liongames.com (or is it lionsgames.com) it is only $13.99 used.

Update: Wow, what normally takes 5 minutes on a computer, takes forever on the Xbox. The Live account creation was painfully slow since I was anxious to play games. It was easy and intuitive, but I was just dying to type stuff in with a keyboard.
PGR3:
Compared to a PC Game, like GTR & GTR2 it's got a bit less detail on the car models, and it's less realistic. However the cinematic effects make it fun and immersive. It just 'feels' great, even with no steering wheel. I like it a lot and would even pay full price for it.
Gun:
It seems fun so far, but the graphics don't look any better than a non-360 Xbox game. It looks like I'll get Call of Juarez soon.
COD2: I played it to death on the PC, yes...great game! I still play a few of my favorite levels from time to time. So, I think I'll pass despite the great deal.
Marketplace, etc: That is slick, even small vid files seem so high res. I watched a few previews like NFS pro street, Endless Sonota...etc. It looks like it's going to a big year.
I also got a demo of GRAW. I bought that for my PC, and it won't run on it worth a damn. I hope to see if it's worth trying again.
I will definitely pre-order some games like Assassins Creed from there. I am buying Halo3 B&M...I can't wait to play it.
I do play Halo2 with my buddies once in a while, so all of us can't wait.

You could have hooked a USB keyboard up to your 360 to do that. 🙂 You can also sign into Xbox.com from your PC and do your account maintenance so you don't have to worry about trying to input stuff from the 360.

Give Forza 2 a spin. The downloadable demo's graphics are slightly less than the retail games but it gives you a good idea of the game.

This was a port from last-gen.

Yeah, I feel rather silly now. 😱

Will do so.

Makes sense.

Thanks for the advice.

ps try lOTR battle for middle earth 2. some people love it. others hate it so i recommed renting first.

You may want to reconsider Call of Juarez. I don't think it's been getting very good reviews. I also have a friend that bought it a couple of days ago and he mentioned at last night's poker game that he wished be hadn't bought the game.

Get the Shadowrun demo, it got fairly bad reviews but everyone I know who has played it has loved it. Many reviewers gave it negative points for being too expensive, but you can get it for around 40-45 on ebay usually.

Okay, I'll hold off on that if it's the popular consensus.
And I will try the Shadowrun demo as well.
thanks for your help guys.

Definitely start off by getting on Xbox Live and downloading demos of anything that even remotely interests you. It's a good way to show off what the system is capable of and it will also give you a good idea of what games you want to buy. I would also recommend getting some kind of rechargeable battery for your controller. I use the charger that charges two at once and swap them out as I use them up, but there are several different methods out there and you should pick the one that looks best for you. As for games, here are some of my favorites so far:

Crackdown
Gears of War
Viva Pinata (Seriously great game)
GRAW and GRAW 2
Call of Duty 2 (But not 3)
Oblivion

Most of those have demos available.

I talked to some buddy's of mine that have friends that work in the industry (they both use to work for some game studios/developers) and I will get COD3 for supercheap as well as Saint's Row. It won't hurt for that cheap.
I also ordered a used copy of GoW for less than $40 after shipping from liongames. Hopefully it will arrive by the weekend.
And following advice, I tried Shadownrun the demo. I loved it! I will buy that soon as well.

Those are all good games IMO. I'd suggest ordering AT LEAST Mass Effect from Lion Games, and think about GTA 4 and Bioshock. All of those titles were going for $40 new.

My favorite games have been:

Shooters:
1) Rainbow Six: Vegas...multiplayer rocks
2) Gears of War...very solid game...great graphics
3) Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2...first was great...second was even better
4) Call of Duty 2...simple, but a lot of fun and people still play online all the time
5) Lost Planet ...kind of a crazy story...but still a fun game

Racing:
1) DiRT...I love Rally games and this one is great. Visuals/car interaction is great
2) Forza 2...not as good graphics...but great simulator

Sports:
1) NHL 07 ...great new controls and killer graphics

RPG:
1) Oblivion ...huge game that can immerse you for days

Other
1) Viva Pinata ... maybe not for eveyone but I can't pull the controller out of my wife's hand
2) Dead Rising ... some of the most fun you'll ever have in a game

Bargain Bin fun:
1) Fight Night Round 3 ...can be a lot of fun with friends
2) Tomb Raider Legends ... if you liked the original Tomb Raider...
3) Need For Speed: Most Wanted ... pretty graphics for a launch title...and fun to boot

As much as I liked the original two games...PGR3 just didn't do it for me. I also have been somewhat disappointed with the FIFA games so far and I've stayed away from Madden completely...hoping this next iteration will tickle my fancy.

I'm REALLY looking foward to the following...all should be coming out this year or soon after:

1) Mass Effect
2) Halo 3
3) Bioshock
4) Alan Wake
5) GTA IV
6) Assassins Creed ...will Jade be a character in the game...
7) Call of Duty 4
8) Half-Life 2: Orange Box (specifically Team Fortress 2 since I've already beaten HL2...but if you haven't...that is one awesome game to play through).

Get Call of Duty 2 instead of Call of Duty 3. CoD3 wasn't developed by Infinity Ward and it shows.

I agree with you. But...
1)I played COD2 on the PC to death. Yes it's a hellova game.
2)My friend is hooking me up with COD3 for a song.

Unfortunately it appears that Saint's Row and COD3 are the only games I can purchase at a 'discount.'
