Is that a bungie cord for the suspended HDD? That gives me some ideas... if I can ever get by without having so many hard drives. :p

Yeah, its not very easy to suspend more than 2 drives. Your best bet is if you have a chieftec style case, suspend the entire detachable hdd bay. But even then, that is still 2 at a time.

gcx, your temp monitors might be off.

How does this mod affect the noise, if at all? I fell like that grill must create a lot of noise, being right in front of the fan.

Its a balance between being more open (more noise escapes) and having less turbulence.

In this specific case, if you use quiet power supply, quiet all fans, quiet NB, quiet GPU, then getting rid of the front grille AND HDD bays helps A HUGE AMOUNT. Turbulence is a huge cause of noise.

I am gonna see if I can remove the front fan without increasing temps. I know it can be done if you have neat wiring, and good ventilation.

So taking off the grill alone won't make that much difference? I've got several hd's in the bay; I don't think i'm going to do the suspension trick.

Does the grill have to be cut off?

Most of the difference came when i removed the HDD bay. I combined all of my non-OS harddrives into a Seagate 400GB one.

I dont really measure my temps. I use the software that came with my motherboard to give me a plus or minus 15 degree range of where my temps are. If I suspect something, I will physically touch the unit.

For instance, I touch the CPU heatsink to make sure it is warm, not cold, not burning.
I also touch the surface of the harddrives to make sure they are ok.

I must add that Im in it for the quietness and am willing to sacrifice 5-10C for less noise.

The fans the SLB comes with only go up to 1200 rpms. Slow and quiet but very weak. Replace them with other fans and use a fan controller to adjust it. Worked well for me.

Yeah, I have also just purchased the SLB, very happy with it, the PSU being so close to my CPU has brought up the temp by 1C, which isn't much, but I wan't very happy with my temps to begin with being at about 53-55c under load.

I found that Antec even makes some nice 120mm blue LED fans that push twice as much air as the ones they put in the case @ only 5 decibels higher. Because the stock fans that come with the SLB only push 35 cfm, the other ones I found push 70 cfm.
