You will see a MASSIVE difference with a decent video card over your MX 200. Best bet is a 9800 Pro for less than $200. Even a ~$100 video card upgrade would be a huge difference over your MX 200.

Hi Mike11 and Welcome to the forums.

I agree with the above poster, you will see a huge difference with a vid card upgrade. It might be interesting to try and play with that MX card and then see the diff with a real one in there.

Since you're starting off with such a low-level card, almost anything you get will whoop the tar out of that MX 200.

What's your budget?

I'd say a 9800 pro (128MB of ram and 256 bit) or 6800 (I think they are about $250). Maybe a X800pro, haven't price checked them so don't how much $'s there.

On a $300 USD budget, definitely go for the 6800. It will stretch you about $250-$300 of it, but it's WELL worth the price over any of the last generation cards. With it, you also get the chance for 4 extra pipelines and 1 extra vertex processor with softmod... not to mention it will run beautifully on your system. Good luck!

I'd say the 6800NU would be a fair bit better than the X700.. I think your rule is not true, because you have an MX200... the lowest GF2 ever made :).... hehe

keep your 300 bucks, save up anoth 60-90 bucks and get a 6800GT. Huge improvement from your old card to teh 6800 wouldnt be a completely accurate statement. I think saying that it would absolutely destroy your old card on every conceivable level would be more accurate. The beauty of teh GT's is that almost every manufacturer's variant of teh card easily overclocks to Ultra speeds, and costs 100 bucks less.

I have a slightly different suggestion that the others: Radeon 9800 pro for $200 max and spend the other $100 on another 512 MB of RAM. It sounds like the 9800 pro would be more than enough for what you want to do, and the extra 512 MB of RAM would help keep things speed for a long time.

Choco, that can be debated. It's really up to him... I'm running perfectly fine with 512MB and a 6800nu. Granted I'm probably running a lot worse than I could be given my processor / lack of RAM, but I think the 6800 really makes all the difference in my machine.

6800 GT is really expensive. I would say wait for an X700 XT or a 6600 GT. Then when R500/NV50 come out, you can sell the X700XT/6600GT, then you'll have enough saved up for a R500/NV50.

I'd either wait a month or two for the AGP version of the 6600 GT or I'd bite the bullet and get a 6800 GT. Every once in a while I find a sale at certain stores for them. Found the BFG 6800 GT for $349 at outpost.

So I'd go with one of those options.
