i went out and got myself a new aquarium system this afternoon..haha..

its all setup now...i know u have to wait a few days so bacteria developes in the tank then u can put the fish in.

what type of fish shoudl i get??

i was thinking of a PUFFER>...so i can watch it eat other fishes!

If you are really into the aquarium thing, try marine/saltwater fishes. Their colors are more vibrant and are generally more attractive fish.
 
I dont think puffers eat other fish..

last time i checked they were really small.

and isin't it salt water ?

make sure you have the tank salt and all that other crap balanced well or you'll be spending $$$$ on fish.

Had those once. Loved em. My fave fresh waters were toxotes jaculator or Archer Fish. I sometimes left the top off the tank and every once in a while they would spit at someone. Accurate buggers too.

Haha, I've been looking around for some new fish and I'll have to check that species out. It would be pretty cool to have spitting fish 😀
 
Don't smoke pot around your fish, skunk.

And it's best to wait at least a week. Check the levels of the water before you put the fish in (pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc).
 
Hmm, from the sound of the poster, in about 2 weeks we are going to see a post about how he wasted 300 dollars on an aquarium full of dead fish.
 
I recently got my first aquarium. I don't know too much but I have 3 African frogs in mine along with the fish and they are the funniest critters I have ever watched.

puffers... all kids are pretty agressive... particularly salt water kind. and trust me they eat fish... all sorts of fish and the way they do it is brutal. they littearlly suck the flesh off fish. it's a gruesome sight.

i strongly recommend against salt water if you are a starter. unless you have some cheap fish like damzels.... you'll be spending a lot of cash on replacing dead fish. the water needs to be perfect otherwise the fish will not last too long.

i advise to get a nice fresh water setup. go for ciclids. african ciclids are generally a bit more colorful but they are also a bit more fussy when it comes to water. they can also be very expensive.

honestly, i'd settle for a pair of jack dempseys. these fish when the grow larger are goreous, and as with all south american ciclids (oscars in particular) they have personality and tend to recognize their owners. don't be suprised if your south american ciclids allow you to hand feed them.

or you can always settle for a gourami tank. get a few dwarfs and some blue and moonlight kind. these fish will survive in gutter water and they're not too shabby.
 
actually you should put atleast 1 or 2 fish in the tank to get the bacteria cycle started. you can add that bacteria in a bottle stuff to your tank, but without fish it will take even longer for your tank to get established. remember when you add fish don't add too many at once because the tank can't support that much fish waste at once.
 
Angel fish are nice. I had some that were much larger than my hand. They are territorial though, and need lots of room (i.e. 10 gallons per Angel)
 
if you want an interesting setup...

get a few south american ciclids. but you HAVE to make sure they are the same size. otherwise you'll get a pretty nasty pecking order where a few fish will be killed.

and whatever you do, do not get a red devil in this setup. once it grows larger it'll tend to kill all it's tank mates.

when i first introduced my red devil in the ciclid tank, the oscars thought it was a gold fish and tried their best to eat it. but that guy was smart... he kept hidden until he got a bit larger... when he was about half the size of the oscars it killed a firemouth, a green terror, a texas ciclid, before turning it's attention on the 3 oscars. it ate about half of one and completely ruined the other two. now the bastard is in his tank all alone... and he will charge the glass and start nipping at you when he sees you. if the material wasn't plexiglass, i can gurantee he would have long ago shattered through.

that's because they are part of the ciclid family. 🙂

the only ciclids that are pretty much docile are discus... which i feel can rival and silly salt water fish in beauty. 🙂

Seriously, discus are wonderful fish. Not for a n00b though.
 
Fish come apart too easily.. In my tank, I used non-aggressive fish. Every once in a while there was still a fish fight, though. And, whatever fish got in a fight would rip each other apart. I couldn't understand how these dumb fish could manage to tear the fins off themselves.

LOL, my parents got bored with the tank and I didn't bring it with me to college. My parents certainly don't want to flush the fish. We figured they'd all die soon enough since one died on me about every two months.

Well, it's been three years and all of the fish I left are still alive. Stupid fish.
 
"Cichlids" not "ciclids"

Anyway, go for a pacu. Feed it often and all it can eat. It'll go from quarter size to 10 pounds of fish in just a few years. You can feed it:
bags of carrots,
critters
hot dogs
etc. once it gets big.

They're very similar to piranhas in appearance, except they grow to a much larger size.
Once they're bigger, you'll want to make sure the sides of the aquarium are pretty strong. My brother's pacu, "Chunk" has the habit of picking up rocks with his mouth and slamming them against the glass.
