I am a graphic designer at a NYC book publishing firm. I have about 7 bosses. My immediate boss, the art director, is a complete psycho. I'm talking about a printer kicking, foot stamping, tantrum throwing, monitor bashing nutjob. We had insane deadlines, I've been there past midnight at times. It was an impossibly stressful work enviroment. I had about a 1 3/4 hour commute each way, but the pay was good. Now I got a job at a local WebDev firm, a 5 minute commute, same pay, laid-back atmosphere. I think it was a no-brainer.

that is my dream job (not with the seven neurotic bosses, but working at a publishing firm in design) :)

maybe I'm lucky that I got out of the English biz. lol.

If you like "burning bridges"... go for it. Most people like using priors as good references though. Just a thought.

If you like "burning bridges"... sure.

Depends on the job. If you're making less than 30K, then I wouldn't bother giving 3 weeks notice.

Last time I quit a job, I gave them 4 working days notice (and one of those days I ended up calling out sick). Sometimes, the situation just doesn't allow you to give proper notice; in my case, my new employers gave me the employment offer on a Tuesday morning, and told me that they wanted me to start on the following Monday. I quickly typed up my letter of resignation and gave it to my boss right before going to lunch that afternoon :)

That should not be your dream job. Forget the bosses, publishing is always a high-stress enviroment. There are hard deadlines. And if you are working in design, forget about showing your own creativity until you make art director. All your work will have to conform to what other people deem "nice". Mostly, it sucks. You feel stifled. I can go on and on. There are some great design jobs in publishing, but not many. Not until you are art director anyway. My $.02.

Why do I have such a fetish for women in business suits? :Q

I love the building I'm working in. Lots and Lots and Lots of skin tight "business" suits, short skirts, stockings, etc... drool...
