That depends on bandwidth limitations from the hosting company and the load the server can take. You'll need a good database backend such as mysql, sql server (w2k/NT), PostgreSQL, or even Oracle. You're best bet is to run something like phpBB2 and grab one of the mods that you like from their site. Their forum software is proven, they release security patches frequently, have a good community support forum; hell, you can even instant message the developers/coders over AIM!

If you're looking for hosting providers, check out CIHost.com or RackShack.net if you're looking for your own dedicated box. I ordered a box from RackShack and was going to turn it into a Counter-Strike server, but since they're in Texas, even with their multiple 1Gbps links, the latency wasn't too great for me in Chicago. They do offer a lot of bandwidth. Try downloading something from RavenServers.com and you'll see what I mean. Also, www.pcck.org/forums is hosted by RackShack.net and the run vBulletin. Quite snappy even though they run a TFC and CS server on it full-time and do webhosting off of it. Uber-bandwidth. You can get an unmetered 10Mbps box (1GHz PIII, 512MB RAM, 40GB 7200RPM, RedHat 7.2) for $399/month. 10Mbps unmetered should be enough bandwidth for almost anyone. The real limitation there is server hardware if you're going to be running forum software off something like that. A 1GHz PIII can't hold all that much on it's own.


 
One day (yeah, right) I plan to write a forum application with a rich client front-end.

Refreshing the same messages over and over is suck and such a huge waste.
 
Lots of forum packages prevent that -- you can just subscribe to a thread and have replies sent to you, notified by PM, etc. 🙂

To keep track of posts on a huge board like this or hardforum.com I just do a search, bye username for author, all forums = shows replies to threads I've replied in. It works great.
 
i just subscribe to thread here because i post in so many things it is easy to lose track of the threads. when i wake up i expect to see the usual 150 new unread messages
