i'm trying to solder some really thin gauge wire to a really small circuit board. I have a solder iron, flux paste, and solder wire. isnt there something i should use the flux paste for?

Not if your solder contains flux. You only really need flux if the solder won't stick otherwise.

The flux will help you get a better solder joint. When you strip the wire, dip the end in the flux or smear some flux on it. That way, when you solder, the lead will flow in between the individual wires. You'll end up with a better connection and a prettier solder joint.

It helps to put some solder on the wire first. Then put the wire on the thing you want to solder it to and touch it with the soldering iron until the solder melts.

If you do it that way, you have to make sure that the wire itself has gotten hot even after the solder melts if you want a good connection. Otherwise you'll get a "cold solder" which will break easily.

Yeah that's true, you have to do it right. But that's by far the easiest way for me to solder very small circuits.

You probably have rosin core solder which will have plenty of flux inside it for the job. You can heat both surfaces until the solder flows across them before joining them. This is called tinning. Also heat the worksurface and let the solder wick it up. Touching the solder to the iron is not the proper way. Should be quick and easy.

what if what you want to solder besides being really small is also in a compact place? how do you do it without it touching something else?

In tight spots I try to put just enough solder on the wire first; not too much. That way when I solder it to the component it doesn't tough anything else. And use small wire.

There is no easy way to do it without expensive heating eqipment. Just take your time and go slow. I use Soybomb's way, as it is easiest.

One of the PS2's I tried to fix (mod gone bad) was a pain to mod. I don't remember what chip or version PS2 it was but it required soldering to about 8 consecutive pins on a small chip.

Let me throw in a guess..

You were working on it in the garage, then your mom came home when you weren't attending it and it got driven over.

I've done a few ps2s. What happened? Maybe I can help you. And don't listen to anyone that tells u rosin core flux solder is sufficient. You need good flux to mod a ps2.
