I just got a copy of HL2 for xmas but can I set it up on two machines and play lan games? I really haven't tried yet so thats why I ask. I don't want to mess up my one license by doing this if it's a "no no". Seems to me it should be allowable though.

Bump....Does anyone know this? I'd like to know before I dedicate an hour to the install of the game.

It isn't allowable, because there's no way to prove they are both yours. You have a license to run it on a single machine at a time.

There technically is a way to do it, and it's even described on their website, but you have to turn off your internet for it to work.

i got it to work on 2 machines this way:

1. update HL2/steam account

2. copy the steam directory on one computer to the other ( i assume it would work for as many computers as you would need ) - i dont think it matters that its one account.

3. make sure you arent sharing your internet connection (but your internal network is still on ) , and start steam up in offline mode - you can speed this up by disabling your network card ( right click on the network icon and select disable ) until steam complains that it's in offline mode, then turn it back on.

4. start a server on one computer and connect
