I just came home with a Turion lappy! :) ||Updated||

That is a great machine for the money but gaming will be limited. It is essentially an X300 core with shared memory. You only have a shot at playing HL2 with low res & 1GB or more of RAM. Older games would play okay on there.

Not many places pricematch online sites. I got Wal-Mart to pricematch a digital camera vs. an online site once, but you have to find someone pretty dumb. 🙂

Damn, same setup is under $1250 at hpshopping.com

I knew we'd be paying more for it @ compusa, but how do you tell that to someone that is buying you a gift? Never-the-less a matching one for your brother? I probably could have gotten a better laptop overall but what do I say? No Dad, that's not good enough for me? Just curious...you would have done that?

No bud, you weren't paying for it...so it doesn't matter. 🙂 I was just pointing it out, primarily because I was looking @ getting one and was curious on how the price compares to online.

DVD Play Time was 2 hours and 30 minutes. I also installed a game in the background (Tiger Woods PGA 2005) durring DVD playback. It was installed over WiFi from cd images (*non-warez of course. I have most of my games/software/drivers in an iso library*) on my desktop. So I think that 2 1/2 hours could be more with just dvd playback. My guess is 2 3/4 - 3 hours? That's just my random guess. I'll try another movie w/o doing anything else.

On another note, there is a little hope for this laptop for gaming! Although it is no BF2 or D3, this laptop can definately play TW PGA 2005 or games along these lines. Tiger Woods was very playable at the LCDs resolution and moderate graphics settings

You said the screen was wide and only supports a 1024x768 res? That's strange. 😕
I would expect it to run a wide native resoulution.

Nobody said that. The L2000 native resolution is 1280x768. Fbird asked him to run some benchmarks in 1024x768, though.

Ok so this is what I got in 3dmark2001 SE

3DMark Score 2590
Game 1 - Car Chase - Low Detail 40.7 fps
Game 1 - Car Chase - High Detail 19.3 fps
Game 2 - Dragothic - Low Detail 36.6 fps
Game 2 - Dragothic - High Detail 22.0 fps
Game 3 - Lobby - Low Detail 37.4 fps
Game 3 - Lobby - High Detail 21.7 fps
Game 4 - Nature 9.2 fps

There's two oddities that I've noticed. 1) the internal clock speed is 800mhz When I open up CPUID sometimes it fluctuates from 800mhz to 1.6ghz 2) The memory for the video card's memory is 64mb? Can I change this through the bios?

It IS running at 800! How do I change those settings? Is there some sort of power saving settings that I'm not aware of? Thanks!

Check out your power settings make sure you are pluged in to the wall when running the tests. Also yes you set the Ram in the Bios i wager. Just saw this lappy 4 the first time 2 day and it looks sweet. Not bad for the price.

I got the videocard's memory back up to 128...Still no luck with the cpu though! In CPUID the multiplier varies from 2 to 4 to 8 to 9. This is with the powercord in securely

What is your Windows power scheme set to? Try setting it to Home/Desktop. If that doesn't work, google for and download SpeedSwitchXP. Set the CPU clock to Max Performance when on AC using this program and it will run at the full clock speed regardless. Then re-benchie 🙂

Thanks for the threadcrap. I thought that only happened in Gen. HW and FS/FT forums?

I decided to reinstall windows w/o all the pre-loaded crap. I took an image of the harddrive w/ Acronis TrueImage. I then formated and booted up a fresh install of xp pro.

i tried speedswitchxp (thank you fbrd! i now know why everyone looks to you for advice! You rock!) and it was exactly what I needed. I'm now retesting the battery life and I'm on pace for 3:30 dvd playback! This was with the help of SpeedswitchXP. I guess the Turion was running at full speed last time around; this time I have it on max battery, which is at 800mhz.

Unfortunately my 3dmark2001 score didn't increase. I think this was because the CPU was, infact, running at 1.8 ghz. What was happening is the turion varies the speed for the user's need. So opening 3dmark wouldn't need any cpu power so it was at 800mhz, and when the benchmark started, it'd go full speed.

I agree; it's hard to be picky about a gift, especially if your dad is not a big techie. Well, it was very generous of him, and the laptop will serve you well 🙂 Enjoy it!

If that's the case then the 3DMark01 scores are rather disappointing. That is above the old Intel Extreme 2 but a good deal below GMA900.

And the Sony in that review had a 4200RPM drive and I think 1.6GHz CPU.
Poor ATI, their IGP sucks compared to Intel's :Q

However it looks like you've got a nice machine. Enjoy 🙂

ATI's IGP sucks?
http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2269
Search for "At 800 x 600 the Radeon Xpress 200 is playable" without the quotes. Shows ATI's IGP kicking Intel's butt, and all other reviews I've seen seem to show the same.
The GMA900 is also included in Farcry, Sims 2, and BF:Vietnam tests, it loses everyone of them. Not always significantly, but sometimes.
Here's another:
http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/radeon-xpress200/index.x?pg=6

I'd also imagine that ATI's IGP will have better driver support.

the problem is that at 800 x 600 it will prob look like trash. Most lappys don't look very good at anything other than their native setting.

Well, you always have the option not to stretch the image to fit the screen.
I remember on an old Vaio I had with the original mobility rage, there was a severe performance hit for stretching the image to fill the screen.
