I just bought the Asus VG248QE after reading many reviews stating it was excellent

While it appears to be pretty damn good, I'm a little thrown off by how dark scenes look in a few games I've tried. I also can't seem to recall if they looked like this on my old monitor (Gateway FHD2400) also or if this is a symptom of the new one. Would anything about the specs between these two monitors indicate why I'm seeing this on the new one and never noticed or experienced it on the Gateway?

Here are a few shots I took. The first image is from the game Outlast, the second is from Battlefield 3, the third is an in-game screenshot of BF3 so you can compare it to what it looks like on the monitor.

I also tried Amnesia: Machine for Pigs, and the colors in general just didnt seem right. When I went to the gamma settings in the games menu, the boxes are far more true black than they end up looking in game (more gray/washed out blue than black). And then again tons of gradients with all the darkness the game contains.

I'm running these games at Ultra/Max settings at the monitor's maximum resolution.

This is some sort of dithering issue, correct?

Is this a symptom of the type of monitor this is, a setting I should be toggling in the monitor or game's settings, etc.?

Is there a better/proper way of illustrating what I'm seeing via screenshots, video capture, etc.?

I can't imagine this is considered normal and how games should look. Can anyone recommend a monitor primarily for pc gaming in the 250-300 range that would be better than this? It has great reviews on Amazon and Newegg, so I'm kind of confused. Thanks!

Make sure the monitor's color preset is set to sRGB. Various "auto", "vibrant", "picture", etc., modes will always look screwy. Then, set any in-game gamma, brightness, contrast, etc., to defaults. Then, make sure the video driver's display adjustments for those are all at defaults.

Without context (like a matching screenshot for the picture), and not being too familiar with the games, I can't say anything for the bottom two images. But, the top one is definitely washed out, like the gamma was set too high.

I'll give that a try after work. Having a look at the specs for the monitor, it shouldn't have an issue like this, right? I understand one of the main selling points is the high refresh rate options and not colors, but it should still look better than another TN monitor that is 5 years old at least?

BenQ's XL2420TE is one of the best monitors out there. I would prefer that monitor over the Asus.
