I'm contemplating over getting the AMD 3700+ now or wait for the next cpu price drop and pick up an Opteron.

I want to max out my board with the best cpu at the end of 2007/beginning 2008 (Will there even be any 939 chips to buy that time?). Will AMD be making anymore 939 chips? When should I buy the chip? From reading the forums, AMD wont be making anymore 939 chips? I'm also afraid that they will be all sold out and wont be getting more in stock? I dont wanna be left in the dust.

I have a Prescott 3.0ghz to hold me over and how does it hold up against an AMD 3700+?

Can you guys give me some advice pls? Much appreciated!!!

939 is dead...if you wait you won't be able to find anything new. You'll have to buy used. Get what you can now.

Opteron 165s are cheap now.

What would be a good heatsink/fan for the 4000 if I get that one? Is there anything to back up the statement that AMD wont be contiuing s939 market speeds/chip?

If dual core come down in the future you can always upgrade to it. Then sell the 4000 on the fs/ft forums. Why wait?

Just my 2c

because you won't be able to find ANY socket939 CPUs eventually, and second...nobody would want to buy a single core CPU. It's hard enough to sell dual core socket 939 CPUs. I've seen x2 3800+ CPUs up for sale for a while

Buy dual core now and save yourself the trouble.

Second that. Wait and there will be nothing to buy.

Eventually - That is the key word here. I went to AMD website and there is no discussion about discontinuing production line of 939 cpus. I don't want to plot down $155 for an opteron 165 if the 185z (fastest at present for an opteron) will hit that price mark at end of 2007/beginnng 2008 for just an 800mhz upgrade either.

I dont mind waiting for the next cpu price drop which I was told was in Feb. by a friend but please don't quote me on it. I'm an impulsive buyer and I'm trying to stay away from doing so until I see proof of it and I do agree that single cores are pretty much dead but luckily there isn't much out there that is making use of dual-cores. I say this only bcuz I'm not a heavy gamer and plan to run this machine as a server when I get my next machine after Vista comes out with SP1/2.

In any case, the 4000+ $83 is an OEM and a decent heatsink/fan aka Scythe Ninja Plus would run me $47 with shipping. That total is almost the cost of an Opteron 165 Retail for $20 more.

My question is should I go cheap now and get the best processor for it later on or just buy a 165 and forget about it?

That's because they already stopped production IIRC. Socket 939 chips are almost gone from the retail channel. Buy now or you will have to get a used one.

Listen to cmdrdredd. Just think of supply and demand. Lots and lots of people with 939 boards and no new chips being made. High demand, low supply. When again to you expect a price drop?!?!?

The chips are all EOLed, there isn't going to be an official price drop AFAIK. Prices will be going up as fewer procs are available.

You guys got me sold on getting the chip now ...

Should I go 165 Retail for 154 or get the 175 OEM for 179?

What would be a good heatsink/fan for the OEM as well as cost?

The 175 has an 11x multiplier versus the 9x on the 165. Depending on what board you go with, you may hit the boards HTT ceiling before you max out the chip of you decide to overclock with the 165. Most K8 boards that are not high-end OCers will max out at or below 275Mhz HTT speed, which is only a shade under 2.5Ghz with the 165. Getting a model with the higher mutliplier might allow you to get another few hundred Mhz out of the chip. Whether the extra expense is worth it is up to you and what you'll be doing with the chip.

I'd go for a retail boxed cpu just for the 3 year warranty, unless you want the 4000 oem for $79.99 at newegg. Tigerdirect has open box fx heatsinks with copper heatpipes for $8.99 plus shipping.

Mwave.com has good deals on 939 X2, and they are running out of them... "max 2 per customer"

Can't you see that ship is sinking? ;)

get a Opteron 175 w/ an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro for like $25. You can overclock that good...probably near 3Ghz with the right setup.

Up to $87 now. They were $79.99, so prices seem to be going back up. Grab one while you can. So far two of us who bought recently have been able to OC above 3GHz with these (and no other reports of OC).

.. Or get the fastest Socket 939 processor, with a "throw-away" motherboard to boot, for a much lower price than any where else...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications...asp?EdpNo=2851762&sku=MBM-MSNV939-FX60

$299.99 after $20 in rebates! ****HURRY: EXPIRES 1/31/2007****

This price is almost $100 less than the price for the FX-60 by itself! Just got one for my son's box, which also has an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard, along with SLI'd 7900 GT's...

He's salivating at the prospect of (hopefully) getting about 3-3.1 GHz out of the chip.
