I just bought a Vizio TV.

Have had a 1080p 42" vizio LCD for going on 3 years now, and it has been amazing for dvd's, blu-ray's, HD-TV, gaming on wii, 360, and ps3.

I think it's like those UTZ potato chips here in NYC. At first they were considered bootleg, but they were cheaper than Doritos and tasted just as good. After a while they lost the "bootleg" air surrounding them.

I guess its the same for Vizio now. lol

What are you insane? UTZ is the shit, never once considered them off brand.

I didn't realize that they were such an established brand of potato chips. I remember them jumping onto the scene fairly recently, and they [used to be] priced 50% less than the "bigger-named" brands.

I'd never purchase any "refurbed/returned" brands of monitors/LCDs for fear of getting one that had dead or stuck pixels. It's also why I purchased my last monitor and TV through Costco, because of their easy return policies.

I have a Dell that I have coming in the mail in late April, hopefully that will be ok. when it arrives.

You're cool. Vizio is a startup, so they bring last geration's TV tech to you at a really cheap price.

People used to say the same thing about comptuer stuff from Linksys and DLink.

and by 'startup' you mean they've been making branded LCD's since 2002 (when LCD TV's are entering the market). Visio is the north american brand name for Amtran, the OEM company for Viewsonic and Hitachi computer LCD's waay back in the mid 90's at the start of the industry. Of course you are probaby only believing what the advertisers feed you, so keep buying Sony and Bose, they have quality products 😀

Wow, are they still around? I had a Mag Innovision CRT back in the late 90's... I thought they flew the coop.

yup, MAG is actually an alternate brand for proview at the consumer level. they're still operating all over the world and are the main supplier of panels for viewsonic.

Yeah, that is the only problem I am worried about...longetivity...although Costco extends the warranty for free which is a plus.

Do you really like the way those 120Hz TV's look? I know you can turn off the 120Hz feature, but when it's enabled, it gives everything this fake "live camera" look which totally pisses me off.

Not to go off topic, but, since you kinda brought it up, can someone explain to me why, for example, wen you watch the old, original, Twilight Zone episodes, it is so obvious which ones were done live and which ones were not?

The fuzzy image you are seeing is a result of the old method of Kinescope recording. The sharper images were recorded directly in fim using a newer process.

I have a Proscan. It's been great.

Aren't Proscans RCA?

like lexus is toyota though...still different.

Vizios are pretty good. There are some bad apples in their fold though.

It's much like Harbor Freight in a way. I know quite a few high end people sporting Vizio's outside their main viewing room.

UPDATE: Had to get rid of her. She had a mighty fine picture, but I noticed 2 stuck pixels appear right next to each other, one bright green, and one dimly lit blue. When I got the TV, I spent about 20 minutes with different backgrounds looking for stuck/dead pixels, and there were none.

Unfortunately, my TV didn't qualify for Vizio's 0 stuck pixel policy, so I ended up selling it for $200 less than I bought it for. I went and bought an LG, and after spending almost an hour looking for artifacts, I found nothing.

I still stand by my Vizio is great policy, but it didn't work out for me this time. Besides, their higher end TV's have a beautiful policy regarding stuck/dead pixels (it even says right on the box!!!)

I just can't stand LCD defects.

You got rid of it because of two stuck pixels?!? Yeah, I would say Vizio is certainly not for you.

Think of it this way: You only lost $100 per pixel.

Wow.

You coulda scored a client out of this 🙂 Strict liability applies to LCD's right? Those two pixels could explode...

IMO that's a pretty minor issue, especially from a normal TV viewing distance. It would be a lot more frustrating for a computer monitor, but for a TV you would never notice it unless you're up close. Some people just obsess over stuck pixels, though, even if they are barely noticeable.

And FWIW, the panels themselves are only manufactured by a few companies (Samsung and LG are the two big ones I believe) and used by all brands, be it budget like Vizio or higher-end. A few stuck pixels showing up could happen with any brand, and who knows it may actually be very common. I think my LCD TV has developed a few bad pixels, but they're not noticeable from more than a foot or two away, and even then you really have to look for them.

Well, I sold it to my bro-in-law, so the $200 hit wasn't so bad. I had the opportunity to return it to Costco, but the $200 difference was OK to keep it in the family. 🙂

And yeah, I have 0 tolerance for stuck pixels. It's a mental thing. 🙁

The 2 pixels showed up in the "black bars" area of the TV, and the green one was visible from a few feet away. 🙁 If they were just half-lit, I wouldn't mind as much since it was being used as a television.

I don't mind dead pixels as much though...

Did you try any of the fixes for stuck pixels? I think there are a few things that may work (rubbing them, for example), but no idea what the success rate is on that.

I had success with massaging my monitor at work. I was able to massage it out after a few tries, but it eventually pops up again, and I have to re-do it.

I left the java fix running on the TV for about 20 minutes over the pixels, and nothing. I couldn't squeeze them out either -- killed me...lol

I think most lcds have an extra plastic covering a bit removed from the panel itself. Rubbing wouldn't help because you can't actually touch the spot that's stuck. I think there are programs you can get that flash colors across the screen which has a slight chance of unsticking pixels. I think I would have given that a try.

Edit: ^^ I see he's done that as well. Nothing else to do but get rid of it then. A stuck pixel would have bothered the shit out of me too.
