I eat mostly everything. I enjoy trying new foods and different cultures diets. Most everyone I work with knows this. I'm often given some 'rare' goodies from time to time. IE: A buddy of mine brought me some 'jack fruit' from India. I'm glad he ate it with me, because I kept eating the wrong part of the flesh (the parts you don't eat looked a lot like the parts you eat to me).

Another co-worker gave me a cashew fruit. I had no idea that there is a pear like fruit that grows above a cashew nut. He's from Nicaragua and we've often talked about the foods he misses from his childhood. Well, low and behold his wife found some REAL cashew fruits (frozen, but legit). He brought me one in a bag and it still had the nut attached to the bottom of it. I tried eating the fruit (it was odd, but I've since learned that some people just chew it and suck out the juice, then spit out the 'pulp'). I messed around a bit and tried slicing it up, etc... When I was done, I tried biting the shell off of the nut (it was a soft shell (maybe because it was frozen?)). That didn't work too well, so I cut into the shell all the way around and was able to split it open. I couldn't really pop out the nut (it was kinda soft) so, I tried biting it out of the shell with little success. So, I cut into it with the knife and ate a little bit. It really wasn't good and I chalked it up as maybe being spoiled.

My lip and mouth started tingling / burning a little while later. I rinsed off / out my mouth and finished working on my daughters car. Coming inside about 1/2 hour later, it wasn't feeling much better. I looked at my lip / mouth in the mirror and it looked normal (not red or swollen like I had expected it to be). So, I chalked it up to me possibly being allergic to raw cashew nuts. I heated up and ate the pastelon he gave me (a banana / meat dish) and felt a little better but still had a tingling in my mouth.

I finally sat down in front of my PC and decided to google 'raw cashew po'... That was all I needed, auto complete filled in the 'poisonous' part for me:

Ok, so I'm guessing that the small part of the raw nut I ate isn't enough to kill me. I'm guessing that reason my mouth was bothering me so much is the Poison Ivy type substance in the shell of the nut that I tried biting off. Well, the tingling / burning has mostly subsided (about 3 hours later) and I'm off to bed. I figured I'd drop a line here and ask how many people have ever hear of such a thing as this?

Zoinks! I remember an episode of No Reservations where Tony Bourdain went to either Indonesia or Thailand and found a cashew farm. The fruit is usually only sold locally b/c it spoils so quickly. Apparently the juice is pretty good.

I heard the cashew fruit is quite tasty if you can get it fresh. It would be one of the things I would want to try if I traveled to a country with the plant.

Fun fact, mangos are in the cashew family.

Consider that nuts are commonly available in their shell except, conspicuously, for cashews. Dun dun dun! Also, they are processed individually by hand which explains their relatively high cost.

I'm up this morning and luckily my mouth looks pretty good. I was afraid it'd be kinda nasty with poison ivy like problems, but it isn't. The left side of my lip still feels a bit numb, but I can deal with that.

I won't see the guy who gave me the fruit until Monday. I'm trying to figure out what to tell him... Hey, thanks for the fruit, but the nut really f**ked me up! Or should I just play it off like: The fruit was alright, but I LOVED the nut! Please get me some more raw ones! I don't know how I'll approach him, but I'll certainly break his chops. FWIW: The pastelon was really good, so I at least owe him a thanks for that.

As I understand it, the toxin -- which is the same stuff that makes poison ivy nasty -- is mostly in the shell, not the nut itself. Even the "raw" cashews you buy in the store aren't really raw -- they haven't been roasted, but they've been lightly cooked to help ensure that the toxin is removed.

The fruit part is called a "cashew apple" and is a delicacy in tropical regions. I tried it once and wasn't too impressed.

On the food show I saw it was said that the fruit has something like five times the vitamin C of an orange (scurvy be gone!). Workers oil their hands to protect from the acid remaining after cooking. Apparently, glove technology has not yet reached Mozambique.

Soybeans are the same: You don't want to go through a soybean field and help yourself =P.

For human consumption, soybeans must be cooked with "wet" heat to destroy the trypsin inhibitors (serine protease inhibitors). Raw soybeans, including the immature green form, are toxic to humans, swine, chickens, and in fact, all monogastric animals.[16]

Update:

After dealing with this 'rash' for a few days, I went to a walk-in medical center (doc-in-a-box) today. I've been using Tecnu to wash the affected areas and then treating those areas with Calagel (a clear Caladryl type lotion) or Ivarest (a Caladryl type lotion). I started taking some Benadryl last night.

My lips which were where the initial outbreak occurred have gotten better. My neck and chest / arm / eyes have stayed about the same. Unfortunately, my genitals have it pretty bad (red, swollen, and itchy). Yeah, have at it... I'd make fun of my 'dog dick' too. The doctor didn't give me a shot of Cortizone 10 (or whatever my buddy got from his doctor when he had Poison Ivy), instead he prescribed me Prednisone (4x10 for 3 days, 3x10 for 3 days, 2x10 for 3 days, and then 1x10 for 3 days). I took the pills around noon today and I don't see any real improvement so far (I was hoping for quick relief). Frankly, I guess since it took a few days for me to get this bad, it'll probably take a few days to really clear up.

I had been thinking that the rash that I have could spread to other areas. I didn't know why it'd be on other areas of my body other than my lips. I assumed that I must have rubbed / scratched my lips while sleeping and then taken a leak when I got up without washing my hands *first* in order for it to make the leap to my genitals. The doctor told me that it is showing up in different areas because it is coming from the inside out. Rather than brushing against a poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac plant, I ate something that has the same type of toxins in it.

At least I don't freak out every time my face or a rash itches now. For the past few days I'd be grabbing a bottle and dabbing a product onto the itch and washing my hands immediately after that. Honestly, I have new-found respect for people who suffer from OCD, that must be a nightmare.

I remember hearing from people that 'weening' off of prednisone wasn't being done anymore. I guess, I heard wrong or they went back to doing it. Does anyone know why sometimes they ween patients off of Prednisone and sometimes they don't? Perhaps I'm associating it with when they treated my wifes MS with IV Prednisone. Perhaps pill form is different. Can anyone explain about that?

FWIW: At least 4 people who I've talked to have said that they have never heard of problems with the nut. They have all eaten the fruit, but never touched the nut. Three guys said that they have only seen the nut while being in the country, and one guy said that they had to give all of the nuts to an elder whenever they ate the fruit. He said he didn't know the reason why they did that, it was just the way they were taught as kids.

Edit: BTW: It wasn't until Saturday afternoon (around 36-42 hours after eating the nut that the rash started.

Edit 2: Ugghh.. I forgot to mention that the doctor told me NOT to run for a week (I had asked about it). He suggested that if I had the urge to exercise, I should lie down until it passed. I pressed him to see if I had to really wait 7 days (I ran 2 miles yesterday morning), and he said that he didn't want me to sweat for a week. No exercise for 7 days. Dang, that sucks...

Prednisone expert here. Yes, they still ween you off prednisone. They ween you off because your body will stop producing natural corticosteroids. Stopping abruptly may give you Addison's disease.

I was on prednisone from January 2012 to September 2012. I was on 100mg a day, got weened off until September 2012. On imuran now.

They nearly always try to get people off of prednisone as soon as possible due to its side effects. They even try to cycle people who need it for chronic conditions. For temporary conditions, they will nearly always wean you off of it ASAP. I think that has been the way it has always been - it never really changed.

This is sounding familiar. My story is very similar. I chewed on one of the seeds and ingested some of the seed oil. The immediate feeling in the mouth was a burst of parching unripe banana x 1000 and diesel fuel. That sensation went away after an hour or so but I had severe itching inside of my mouth for around 9 days. Benadryl made it bearable. The rash didn't start until 8 days post ingestion. I'm now on day 10. The Benydryl is not helping with the itchy rash and the welts are spreading from mouth to face to chest to legs to genitals and I'm getting a little short of breath. Tomorrow morning I will finally see a doctor. Avoid that damn cashew seed oil at all costs.
