I joined the AAA, thank you everyone :)

Grand Nagus
AAA Basic membership $54/yr

Road America (CostCo) $30/yr

Although AAA is almost double the price of Road America, AAA offers A LOT of services with their card.

I think we're going to choose AAA because they have office in downtown Portland where I can get my card immediately. They have that nice maps service which we may use but they also offer discounts on hotels, motels, services, etc. CostCo members do receive a discount off AAA membership but it's a paltry $2.01/yr savings, that's all.

Which should we sign up for and why?

UPDATE: Tuesday I joined AAA 🙂

Neither. I get it through my car insurance. I'm not sure exactly what the individual cost for the service is, but it isn't more than $2.50 a month.

Been with AAA since I was 16. I've definately saved more then I've spent with them. And people have AAA discounts everywhere. I was in toronto 2 weeks ago, ate at the HRC, and saved $20 US (took my friends to dinner) just on that.

pyonir - Good point, however I prefer to keep my roadside assistance separate from my insurance company because of the way they do it. Also if you call roadside assistance too many times your premiums increase.

I too get Road assitance through my insurance, USAA, and get it for $25 a year. It's great... In the last two years, I've had my truck jump started 3 times (long story... a line of bad batteries) and had two vehicles towed out of ditches (not mine). They haven't flinched or raised my premium a bit.

Great service, I recommend it to all USAA holders.

btw, The trip tick service through AAA is nice for custom maps, etc, but you can get the same service with more updated information from a Microsoft Maps or similar software.

Those AAA discounts add up fast if you do any traveling. You can also use their travel agency, and for car registration and title transfer work, and no-fee travelers checks. They even cover you for up to $5,000 in bail if you are jailed for a motor vehicle violation (with certain exceptions like DUI). You hope you never need it, but....

We have something through AllState. Not insured through them, just have their roadside assistance program. But hinking about changing to AAA. No Costco's around here.

How many times do you need it!? I think i've used it like 2 times in nine years. But anyway, I'd probably go with AAA then.

Seldom.

Definitely to change a tire, tow or gas. I rarely lock my keys in the car since we have car alarm with remotes, if I lock my keys in the car, wife has a remote also.

I'm voting for AAA. I think the only place I've used my AAA card for discounts was at a dry cleaning place. When I was in Ohio last year for a car show, I stopped in a the AAA office in town. The town we were staying in wasn't a big one, so it made it a little bit harder to find obvious spots to hang out at. The ladies I spoke with were more than happy to not only give me the free maps, but they marked all the hot spots of things to do. I thought that was really cool instead of a "Here's your map... You find something to do" type of deal.

I like that. We travel 1-2 times a year and it would be nice to get that kind of service.

I make my money back with AAA every year on the free maps alone. Then add in the hotel discounts, restaurant discounts, car buying service (got my new car for $1k under invoice), <list of perks and services goes on and on>....
I don't know how they even stay in business 🙂

I've had AAA for 30 years and wouldn't be without it. Like Vic said, the maps alone pay for the membership. All the other savings are a bonus. I particularly like being able to walk into a AAA office to get my car registered/title transfered etc. No lines like the DMV.

I, too, have been in small towns and stopped at the one room AAA office and the people are always fantastic. They bend over backwards to help you and suggest things to do.

EDIT: Oh, I pay a little extra for the 100 mile towing because I travel a large radius from my home every day. Yes, I've used it too many times.

I get 15% discounts on everything at NAPA, which adds up with 2 cars and changing my own oil. (7 Quarts synth for one of them.)

Since one is a Crown Vic, I'm guaranteed to get the money back with the parts I put into it. At least one belt a year on that beast.

AAA almost pays for itself if you use a lot of the discounts.
I would think that this would be a no brainer for you! 🙂

Same here - I used to have AAA Plus but I decided the added benefits were not worth the cost. Regular AAA works fine for me, plus you still get discounts 'n' junk.

AAA roadside service is worthless in my opinion. In case of roadside service request you will end-up waiting atleast 2 hours something before somebody shows up. There is also a catch on how far they will tow your car. There was 60min report on how AAA sucks and they around $15 per tow to their tow companies. This is why AAA request will be their lowest priority.

I know all this and am still a AAA member 🙂. Their other discounts more than payoff for their lousy service. I got 30% discount at lenscrafters last time i was there(ended up saving $90.00).

Good but Just don't count on their roadside service.
