I just realized I'm wasting a lot of electricity.
I have a Dual PII-266/512Meg (I know not much ...) runnning linux, a Duron 750/512Meg running Win2k that basically do nothing. I know I can just use the Seti@Home screensaver for the Win2K box (has 512 Megs of Ram) but what/where/how do I set up a client for Linux? FAQs will suffice - I'm a fairly competent (although lazy) sysadmin with about 8 years experience.

What info will I need to join the team?
TIA

Edit: I'm in w/ Duron750 GUI + Dual 266Linux box w/ dual clients.

Glad you're here, Blundar!

Don't let laziness be an excuse :) Grab the CLI client for windows instead of the screen saver.. A month from now you'll thank me ;)
edit> My fav setup is SETIDriver + the CLI for Windows. Set SETIDriver to low priority and you won't even notice it. It
will just grab idle cycles. Plus SetiDriver can cache extra work units for those unexpected down times...

Good luck, it's not hard at all to get up and running in a few minutes even on Linux -- but if there is a snag, just post away.

Welcome aboard, Blundar :)

You can get much better times and thus more WUs out of the CLI client (directions), and I would also recommend using the SETI Driver add-on (directions). Unfortunately, I have no Linux knowledge or experience, so I can't help you there...

To join the TeAm, you'll need to go to this page. You'll need your SETI e-mail address and your SETI password. If you don't know your password, go here, fill in your e-mail address, and they'll send it to you. A word of warning though, if you're using a service like Hotmail that has junk mail filters, it will probably end up in your Junk Mail folder.

Welcome - note that with the dual setup you should set processes to '2', so you can process 2 at a time. I dont think 2 cpus work so well only processing one. (Someone should really confirm this before you believe me ;))

Blundar have you checked out SetiSpy? It gives you some neat info that maybe your roomies would like better than the GUI :)

And of course Welcome Aboard :D

actually, I remembered why I did GUI...
1. It looks preeety.
2. I want it shut off when foreground is active - this machine is used for DIVX + DVD playback and encoding, and I don't want to steal cycles from these processes when they are active.

heh, alright :) actually that screen saver is pretty sweet in its own right... It tends to grab people's attention and they start asking questions, which is a good step toward recruiting ;)

Glad 'ta have ya. --RT
