I installed a blowhole today... edit: (recently updated)

and it lowered my temps by an average of 15F! Instead of running my Athlon at 113F-115F, it now runs from 96F-100F. The motherboard temp also lowered from 94F to 89F.

I just jigsawed a hole in the side of my case and slapped an 80mm fan and grill there. If you have problems with heat, install a blowhole. Its well worth it.

😀

Zippy:

No it often doesn't. In a closed case the air flow is stronger and cools the inside better than when you open the case. The effect of hot air rising freely is less than the draft in a closed case.

Ok...opening the case and blowing a house fan in it works better though. 😉 Heh. It works REALLY well! 😀

Smurk is right. 🙂

When I took the A+ test..one of the question was that and even the expansion card holes should be cover too.

Thanatopsis:

Did you put the fan blowing in or out? I figure since you put a grille, you're blowing in?

[edit:] Nevermind - I thought you meant filter - a filter would mean you were blowing in.

Paulson is right. I one blowhole on the top of my case and two on the side (if you want to call them that 🙂). They are nice 100 CFM fans and I have grills on them all just incase I drop something thing. B/c like he said, you can touch the blades from both sides...

heh, yeah that's exactly what I need right now..

I have 2 case fans blowing in. one on the side, one on the front. I also need a better CPU heatsink/fan, but a blowhole has been in the works for some time.. after that, I'd only need to get a better heatsink/fan and I'll be done the cooling on this comp...

My blowhole on the Addtronics 7896 case I have was actually blowing in - it's off now because its services aren't needed, but I noticed that having it suck out didn't really do anything, where blowing in did lower the temp by a few degrees C.

Hence, my curiosity. Do most of you have it suck in or blow out?

I have an 80mm on the top and a 120mm on the side. The 120mm blows in the 80 blows out. I'm thinking of reversing the 120mm.

My computer has an overclocked 400 MHZ Celeron (OC at 450MHZ). My computer has a total of 6 fans in it. Four of them are on the chip itself (It's called a Celery Sandwich, 4 gigantic fans surrounding a Celeron chip), one for the power supply, and one at the front of the case. Yet even with 6 fans, my CPU temp is often higher than 35 degreee Celsius so at last I decided to just remove my casing completely and let it run without the case cover. *L*

I was at work, which is why I haven't replied 😛

I didn't think blowhole meant for a top only fan. The reason I don't leave the side off is because I have a cat who especially likes to chew on thin cords and wires. The fan blows out because I have my cpu fans blowing towards the cpu, so the air gets kinda pushed towards the side anyway. I didn't install it in the top because I didn't have the time to remove all the components so I wouldn't get metal filings in them. Besides, I wanted to see how I would do on the side before I messed with the main part of the case itself.

It has a grill even though its blowing out, because of my cat.

Hey and Sharkeeper...

It is a blowhole, because its blowing. In the world of physics, nothing sucks - everything blows 😉😀

Well, she likes to sit up there because it gets nice and warm...

Anyway, the fan isn't on the top, but I don't want her screwing with the fan on the side.

see for you guys the situation is a bit different. all that I have is the power supply fan, and two intake fans (one in the normal front and one I made on the side). I NEED a blowhole on the top to get that air out. opening the case isn't a good option, becuase the air in my house is pretty warm, and it doesn't lend itself to good air circulation anyway.

I'm pretty sure a blowhole will decrease my CPU and Case temp by at least a few degrees..

Blowholes help plenty.. 🙂 I use both intake blowholes and exhaust blowholes.. I'll simply call htem that.

this is my case http://members.xoom.com/mikewarrior4(yeah yeah, no gripes about the xoom crap, okay? 😉). I'm currently running my cpu 7 degrees C above ambient, and the mb chipset is 5 degree's above ambient. I also swapped my mb since I took the pics(its now a Soyo 6vca, rather than a P3V4x).

what kind of case is that Mikewarrior?

BTW that's pretty much the exact way I would set up my fans if I had the money... yes I'm that poor! hehe...

Enlight 7237.... In afterthought, with all the painting i've done, i would have been better off buying a more expensive case..

But it was fun learning process finally getting the painting techniques down.
