The message tries to scare me by saying that previous versions have serious vulnerabilities. I think that 2.95 may be the last of the version 2.xx Winamps. Is it really a good idea to get a later version? I just installed XP Pro a few days ago (used to use Win2000). TIA.

I ran 2.81 for a number of years. Yep, thanks. I thought I'd turned off all that stuff when installing. I just went in and turned it off, even anonymous reporting. Bah.

remind me to send you guys some special audio files, later.

you better at least understand the critical vulnerabilities affecting those older versions.

good luck.

Grab foobar and stop fscking around with insanely old versions of winamp.

Cool. I'd never heard of foobar... fubar, yeah. OK, I'm immediately uninstalling Winamp 2.95, then downloading and installing foobar.

One question, though. I use a freeware program called MP3 Trackmaker 1.2 which works in conjunction with Winamp, at least the early versions I was using. I sort of doubt it would work with Foobar, but I don't know, not having downloaded Foobar yet. MP3 Trackmaker 1.2 works like this:

You open it, select the MP3 file you want to chop into pieces, enter a filename for the pieces you are chopping the file into.

Then you play the unchopped file in Winamp. When you get to a point in the audio file where you want the program to chop the file you press a button and the time of the chop is displayed, e.g.: 1:07:02.23, which would be one hour, seven minutes, 2.23 seconds. At any time, you can delete these marks. When you are satisfied you have all the marks correct (you can pause Winamp, back it up and replay and select any new marks you want), you press a button and the several files are created that are component parts of the original file. For instance, if you called your file newfile, and have two marks, you wind up with:

newfile01.mp3
newfile02.mp3
newfile03.mp3

The first file would be the beginning of the orginal file, the middle one would be the middle section and the last one would be the end.

I use this all the time.

Edit: OK, my guess is this... the vulnerabilities in using early versions of Winamp are probably principally exposed and exploited by MP3's with embedded malware. The files I use MP3 Trackmaker 1.2 on are exclusively files I create by recording radio programs with Total Recorder Standard Edition. These recordings are files I can trust, so if I only use Winamp when chopping up these files, I presume I will be safe. I'll just right click the files and do an Open With when I do this stuff. Figure that's safe?

Also, an exploit would have far less ammo if Winamp is being run from a Limited account instead of an Administrator account. Whatever an exploit's payload might be, it would have to be something a Limited account could successfully do, and that's far short of what the bad guys usually try for

Although it is beneficial that you already know how to use mp3tracker, you may want to look into foobar's mods and native abilities, you may find the functionality you are looking for there also. Check it out if you ever get bored, I don't claim to know everything it does.

Thanks. It's MP3 Trackmaker. It's simple, intuitive, and usually works (not always!). Lately, I've had good luck with it. I've used it probably hundreds of times.

Does foobar have a graphic equalizer? I'd imagine. I haven't installed it yet, but will do so imminently. At the moment, I have no sound programs installed at all, and XP's Media Player is offered when I try to play a sound file!

Maybe I'll try it. I just installed Foobar and am not liking it. For instance, I put in an audio CD. It doesn't autoplay. I open Foobar and start the CD, I get no downloaded song titles. The worst of it is that if I hit the Open button the the CD player, I get an audio loop :Q and have to hit Stop in Foobar or close it.

is Musikcube really good? Maybe I'll just try a newer version of Winamp, one without the vulnerabilities... Are the newer versions any good?

It depends what you're going for.

I think FOOBAR and MusikCube are aiming at the same thing: Low resource usage music player.

MusikCube is a great program though. Easy to use, intuitive, low resource use, etc. Give it a try.

Thanks. I just uninstalled Foobar. My HDTV application's sound had become trashed, and I think it was Foobar's fault. After uninstalling it, the HDTV app's sound was back to normal. I downloaded MusikCube and am about to install it and will give it a whirl.

I'm using MusikCube right now. Amazingly, I configured the equalizer and it actually works! I was never able to get the equalizer in Winamp 2.xx to do anything. I thought it was because my soundcard is connected to my AV receiver by S/PDIF and I had to use analog connections. I never got around to doing that but I have to think it might have been something else. There's no denying that EQ is functioning now!

There's one thing I miss, though, which is a jump forward/jump backward in Winamp using the arrow keys. I don't see anything like that yet in MusikCube.

Edit: Unfortunately, I'm having to goose MC for each song on the CD I'm playing for the EQ to kick in. This even though I have it configured to use the same EQ for all songs. Bug, I guess.

A minute later, I get a popup saying MusikCube has encountered a problem and needs to close. It apologizes for any inconvenience, if I'm in the middle of something (!), I click OK and my music is gone. Ahmm...
