I hope touchscreens are just a fad that die and get replaced by something else

Can't imagine touchscreens going away until (and unless) we somehow get technology that's even more sophisticated.

Hate to bring out the clichéd Steve Jobs example, but I think it applies: as Jobs explained in 2007, touchscreens are generally superior to hardware buttons because you can change the interface to suit the task at hand. You don't waste space with keys that you only occasionally need.

Part of the original poster's problem is... well, the Galaxy S III. It's not all that comfortable to hold, it's harder to reach the corners of the screen, and the software arguably hurts Android as much as it helps. The initial experience would be much better with an iPhone, a Moto X or another device that provides a much gentler introduction to touchscreen interfaces.

Funny you reference that. I remember thinking they would never have anything like that because there was no tactile space between "buttons." Guess I was wrong lol

They both suck balz. Got my wife a Couch Mouse for her laptop (that, of course, has a trackpad) that took her a while to get used to, but now she loves it. Touchscreens? Here to stay. Yeah, I get tired of having to clean my screen every so often, but it's no worse than having to put gas in my car or trimming my toenails. I am interested in what the next step will be.
 
I like touchscreens. But I also like having the option of using a pen. Another reason why my Notes (2 and 3) have been such perfect devices for me. Best of both worlds.

I never gave a thought to touchscreens in cars until I had one. Now that I have a Ford C-MAX Energi, it's another no-brainer in my book. Of course, I rarely ever have to actually touch it; voice control works perfectly for most functions. Beyond that, most everything can be controlled from two steering wheel controllers. The touchscreen is just an added bonus really.

Once again, forget one way of doing things- give me two or three ways of doing things.

These guys demoed a Handset with buttons popping out from the touch screen and disappearing when not required, thereby giving you a "Hybrid" of sorts...

I dunno the actual workability of this tech, but the concept looks promising.
 
I'm fine with it on my phone or a tablet. Its the best thing for those form factors given it allows them to be much smaller and have bigger screens.

On laptops / desktops I see no point to the touchscreen. Had a touch screen hp laptop for about a month the with windows 8 and the touchscreen was totally pointless if you have a mouse. Plus as you said the screen then had smudges all over. I found the experience so terrible with windows 8 that I actually just returned the laptop. Apple has it right.... No touchscreen on their desktops and laptops. Its just a stupid gimmick on those form factors

Most all of them have voice recognition. I just talk to mine and it was a cheaper one. Also have steering wheel controls But even to touch the screen is no more a distraction than one with lots of physical buttons, you get used to where everything is and after a while and don't even have to glance.
Other advantages is built in options for backup camera, GPS, bluetooth and hands free calling.
I'm assuming most all of them have most of those features since my cheap $500 one does minus the GPS

What i see worse than any touchscreen in a car for many drivers is the common cell phone.

I installed Winamp on my HTPC the other day, and I was playing music with it in double-size mode. I was over near my TV yesterday for some reason while it was playing, and I thought to myself how nice it would be to just be able to tap the next track button on the TV to skip songs.

Now I want a 60+" touchscreen TV, but I doubt such a beast exists. 🙁

They exist they just cost $4k+ and are marketed to museums and other such entities. My work has a 60" sharp 1080p touchscreen. Cost us ~$6k
 
I think a lot of people here were critical of touchscreens when they first came out. I remember the response when I was complaining about not having pinch zoom that you could use the volume buttons. I'm sure you all would accept that as the solution in 2014.

Now this is "full circle". We're back to wishing we could get up and physically touch a control ON a TV rather than kick back with a remote from across the room. 😀
