I see it now in HS, "my gf can field strip and reassemble a AR-15 and shoot your gf before she can run away and hide"

<Person dating her> So I take it this is when you're going to give me the talk saying if I break her heart you'll shoot me, right?
<Dad> Nah, she can do it herself.

<Dad> And, from a completely field stripped ar-15 in under 30 seconds. Have fun on your date.

while i admire the kid's proficiency with the weapon, this is not good parenting. small children should not be given firearms. i don't care whether dad is a redneck gun nut or a brave soldier defending our blah blah blah, small children should not be given firearms.

Yeah the fact that she's 11 kinda blows my mind... I mean I'm 23 and I've never owned or properly instructed how to use a real gun before... not that I oppose the right to have/own/shoot one, guess I was just raised slightly different...

Yeah the fact that she's 11 kinda blows my mind... I mean I'm 23 and I've never even held a real gun before... not that I oppose the right to have/own/shoot one, guess I was just raised slightly different...

irrational fear of guns FTL!

I think its great parenting. instead of forbidding your child soemthing, you actually involve them in it, let them use it and learn about it. meanwhile, the kid who is forbidden to even look at it is so curious and enamored about goes and shoots himself or his his friend or sibling while playing with it because he has no knowledge of it or respect for it.

In PA, you can go hunting at 12, but you need to be accompanied by an adult.

i agree here, theres nothing wrong with this, and im pretty sure if she can field strip a AR15 she has been tought proper gun saftey

wow.....both so wrong.

I was reloading shotgun shells when I was 8 and went hunting with my dad every year.

This is actually an example of good parenting. I am sure she respects guns, as I do. The problem comes when parents get afraid of ever letting kids even see a gun, but they keep one in the house. They never teach them about guns or the proper respect to show them, and that's when problems arise.

All the guns in our house growing up (rifles, shotguns, pistols, etc.) as well as the ammo were in unlocked cabinets. But I NEVER would have dreamed of touching them without my dad saying it was okay or being there. EVER.

that's one hell of an assumption you just made. you're also assuming being taught gun safety equates to gun safety being practiced.

then again, i'm assuming she's just like every other 11 year old i've ever seen.

As long as you're not "forced." My dad always made me do stuff with guns because it was stuff he liked to do. I guess if I ever need to, I can at least shoot a rifle pretty well 😱. Would've been great if he actually asked if I wanted to do all that gun stuff... like taking that really long ass hunter's safety course when I have 0 interest in hunting (unless it's Cabela's Big Game Hunter lulz).

hey man, no irrational fear of guns here... I've just lived in cities my whole life and didn't have any friends who were from more rural, gun-friendly area until college. I mean its not like my dad could teach me to shoot cans in our tiny ass back yard... and since you mentioned PA, one of my good friends from engineering school is from there, and I've had a blast on his familys property camping and shooting random crap with his fairly large arsenal of shotguns rifles and handguns...

like they say, guns dont kill people; desperate, uneducated, and generally demented people kill people.
