So this is the stuff that was supposed to be recycled? Instead of actually recycling it (or maybe just taking the stuff that's easy/cheap to) they just shipped it to China?

There was a report...but I didn't get the sense these companies were shut down. Executive Recycling is still there...

Interesting. I've dealt with Envirocycle before (enviroinc.com previously, then bought by Amandi Services). I hope they're legit.
Send them $25, and they send you a prepaid UPS label good for up to 69 lbs. I've bought a total of 3 labels from them for a variety of electronic junk.

Their site made it sound like they do all their deconstruction work here in the US, and only ship out the processed raw materials.

It is ILLEGAL for the USA to export trash like that.

It is also false advertising. People take their e-waste to a company who promises they are truly recycling the waste here in the USA and instead they ship it off to China where kids are dying as a result.

How is this not a problem?
 

I'd be surprised if there are any US companies that actually make money recycling that stuff here. Not only are most electronic equipment made of thousands of nasty compounds but they're put together in such a way that its very energy intensive / labor intensive to recover the materials. You've got lead, plastics, copper, arsenic, silicon, ceramics, glass, organic compounds, etc. bound up in a very difficult to separate mass.

This doesn't surprise me.

It is relatively cheap to ship "stuff" that way. The labor cost is way cheap over there.
Our environmental laws are too tight (IMHO). But, their's are basically non-existent.
 
Unless it flat out doesn't work I just donate old crap to Goodwill. Tax writeoff and hopefully someone gets it for cheap.

Well technically, it's not the USA exporting waste, it's a corporation that happens to be located in the USA doing the illegal act.

Well technically, it's not the USA exporting waste, it's a corporation that happens to be located in the USA doing the illegal act.

Technically it is not the Iranian that attacking the US troops in Iraq, it just that there are rebels that happens to be located in Iranian soil that are crossing the Iran/Iraq border illegally to attack US troops.

It is terrible that we are exploiting the third world more more.

Agreed.

We have to end this crap and learn to clean up our own messes.

Anand should do some sort of article on this stuff/what computer buffs like us are to do to help make sure this crap doesn't happen anymore.
