I hit a turkey (pics and a video)

Cruising along Interstate 90 just outside Spokane, WA. Didn't see it until it was too late. Shattered the driver's side of my windscreen.

The dashcam video was kinda disappointing because the field of view didn't really capture the impact.

Warning: some foul language and awesome music

Did it live?

Edit: looks like your honk saved you some dough. A windshield is cheep compared to body damage.

I doubt it but I didn't find the carcass. I walked back as far as the overpass to look for it, but at the time I couldn't really recall how far back it was that I hit it. After reviewing the video its clear I didn't walk back far enough.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a turkey in the wild before, that would definitely be a surprise to hit lol. Probably think it's a partridge at first sight. Better then hitting a moose I guess. 😛

I've driven that stretch of highway at least 1000 times over the years...LOTS of wildlife out in that area...but it's usually a pretty boring drive. Nothing like a little "OH FUCK!" to spice up the drive!

Garth Hits A Turkey (2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agVTvrXBJEY

I wasn't sure what to expect when i went to see GHaT, but the promise of fowl language and awesome music dragged me in;

true to its title, Garth Hits A Turkey is the story of Garth, a driver, his journey of discovery, and the obstacles he must face along the way.

I do not want to reveal too much as to not spoil the film for everyone, but i found GHaT fairly watchable; the plot is quite straightforward, yet the character development is intense and riveting. We, the audience, can truly feel the change in Garths chanracter between the first act (before hitting the turkey) and the second act (after hitting the turkey).

The music was also reasonable, though not quite as awesome as i expected.

A pretty good film to watch for everyone, would recommend 5/7

As birds, their bones are hollow. The wild ones wouldn't weigh quite as much as the constantly-fed farm raised turkeys.

I'm shocked it did any damage at all. How fast were you driving?

Watched it.

Stupid damn turkey.

I see wild turkeys pretty often in GA, but they're usually staying close to the tree line with a big field separating them from the road. I just never see them venture close to the road at all.

😀

We almost hit a turkey that flew across I-40 directly in front of our car...on Thanksgiving day. True story.

Uh, there's a lot to animals other than bone. Wild Turkeys are still big ass birds. It shouldn't be that surprising at almost 80mph

As a turkey, sure, they have hollow bones... but they are still a large bird with a lot of flesh. Farm-fed ones aren't exactly all nimbly bimbly and able to fly all that well, for obvious reasons. Wild ones are much more lean, of course, but they are still a large bird. I suspect hitting a full-grown eagle would do similar damage. Depending on the exact species and sex, that can be a 5-20lb mass hitting the windshield. Rarely will a windshield escape without damage from that kind of impact. Even the lightest full-grown turkey, at any kind of decent highway speed, should equal some kind of damage unless it's a glancing blow.

True; i also felt the character of the Turkey could have been fleshed out more. And his acting was a bit stiff. ha. ha.

But, seriously, i'm sorry that OP had a crash with no fault of his own. Mostly because it's a totally random tax, bam! you're out of pocket for a new windshield.

But, at least it wasn't moose, those things will wreck your whole car.

also .. i somehow get the impression that your horn got the bird to try and fly away, which kinda pushed him into the windshield; maybe if you had just carried on it would have gotten run over .. maybe.

You probably could've swerved more to the right but hard to predict it flying AT you. How much is a windshield replacement? Would've been nice to get a meal out of it, albeit an expensive one.

Reminds me that I need to put some heavy duty contractor bags in my trunk. :sneaky:

Unfortunately, a wild turkey would taste awful ("gamey") compared to farm raised turkeys.

I've considered capturing the dozens of feral chickens around my mother's place and feeding them grain, but they probably have lots of parasites too.

Can't you just kill the parasites with fire? 😀 How much different than deer meat is it? Venison is usually gamey but I like it.

My buddy has turkeys in his backyard (on 10 acres), he's been bugging me to get a crossbow and we'll hunt and cook em up.

Good thing it wasn't a Deer though. Quite surprised it did that much damage.
My sis-in-law borrowed my Jeep Cherokee many years ago - the turkey she hit went half way through the windshield. OP must have hit a smaller turkey.

You're an idiot pretending to know something. The OP was lucky, given the location of the impact. Must have been a small turkey. Male turkeys weigh 11-24 pounds. Male wild turkeys, that is. You're right - that's not quite as much as a domestic turkey. Perhaps you don't realize that the 16 pound domestic turkey you buy at the store used to have a lot more weight to it - feathers, guts, head, crop, feet, etc. Here's an idea, prove yourself right - go to the store, get an 8 pound chicken, hang it from a string somewhere at windshield level, and drive into it at 60mph. That's a bowling ball. You would be surprised that a bowling ball did any damage to a windshield?!

Or, just a quick google image search for car hit wild turkey:
Turkey2.jpg

That'll buff right out. Look at the google images yourself - many of the turkeys make it completely through the windshield.

Again, apparently speaking from inexperience.
One big myth is that wild turkey is tough and gamey. It's almost laughable to listen to people at Thanksgiving, decry hunting, and how they "can't stand" wild game, while unknowingly gobbling up (excuse the pun) and raving about the wild turkey that is unknowingly set before them. Wild turkey generally has no gamey taste. It has a rich and full flavor, but that is because it's free range, so-to-speak, and is not force-fed-processed feed that contains all types of chemicals and growth-enhancement drugs. And don't you love it when you see the wrapping on a domestic bird say that "flavor is enhanced" by the injection of up to 10% (sometimes more!) of a chemically-concocted fluid. What you get in a wild turkey is nature at its best. Wild turkey tastes like what it eats -- which ranges from domestic crops such as corn and beans -- to almost every type of wild seed. The result? Delicious eating. Wild turkey -- even breast meat -- does taste more toward domestic turkey "dark meat," but that's not a bad thing at all. The taste is mild, yet extremely flavorful and moist. As for tenderness, like any other bird or animal, domestic or wild, it depends on age, and food type and availability. Most have found domestic turkey that is as tough as shoe leather. Same goes for wild turkey if it's an "ancient Tom", although more often than not, wild turkey is wonderfully tender and not at all "chewy."

Some people are surprised to eat turkey that has flavor. The stuff from grocery stores is rather bland in comparison. Ditto grocery store chicken. Both are the result of a desire to breed birds that grow as large as possible in as short of time as possible.

Edit: turkey season opens May 1, on a Sunday. $10 for hunting tags for turkeys, only able to shoot toms. Well worth it, to get a wild turkey - probably the most difficult game animal to hunt.
