I hit a milestone yesterday...

I benched 300lbs! I only did 1 rep but I got it up on my own and was happy about it!

I don't usually max at all but these other 2 guys I always talk to at the gym were there, and 2-3 weeks ago they both did 315lbs, and 1 did 325lbs, and they were benching yesterday too and kept telling me to try 315lbs cause they knew i could do it.

So I warmed up with the following

135x8
135x8
185x6
225x4

Then I was starting my real sets

255x6

And then the 2 guys came in and peer pressured me into trying 315lbs when I was about to do a set of 275lbs (which I hadn't tried since before i started leaning up back around April). So I didn't want to jump to 315 so I just did 1 rep of 275 which was a lot easier than I remembered. So I moved onto trying 315 ...

Needless to say I couldn't get it up and wasn't even too close to getting it, however it wasn't as heavey as I expected. I was going to try 295lbs after (most I had ever tried prior last spring was 285lbs and I got it up) but I was like screw it, if I'm going to try 295lbs, I'm going to add a 2.5Lb plate to each side and go for 300lbs.

And I got it!

It felt great and really pumped me up for the rest of my workout. After flatbench I tried 245lb on the incline bench (which I had never tried) and I was able to do 2 sets of 4 reps after doing 7 reps of 225 on my first set.

So yea, milestone for me! (even though my real goal this bulking season is to get 275lbs 6-8x, and I'm close to that arleady with like 3-4 months left!)

Zoinks! Nice job. When you're going for a 1 rep max, how do you choose a weight? Obviously you choose something higher than you've ever done for reps, but is there a formula/standard that can be used?

i honestly don't know, i never really max nor really cared for maxing out, i just kind of fell into this peer pressure of these other guys I know at the gym heh. but i will say putting 3 plates on each side and getting that once is definitely going to be another milestone once i hit that, and I think by that time I'll be hitting my rep goal of 275lb 6 or 8 times.

Congrats! Hitting 300 is damn impressive - how much do you weigh? Of course, in the gym world, at least in the US, everything is measured in 45's, so 315 is the next milestone you need to work on. I remember the first time I tasted the three plates per side goodness 🙂

I weigh myself every sunday and this past sunday i was 210.2lbs and I'm 5'11. I try not to weigh myself between so that I can see weekly gains in my weight instead of wondering if it's just water weight one day and gone the next.

yea maybe next month I'll try 315lbs just to try and (hopefully) do it. but in all honesty i just don't really care much about what I can max, but it does feel good and sound cool to say that i can bench 300 pounds!

Just wanted to update and say I did 305lb x 2 yesterday on the flatbench and was pretty happy about that, doing it right after I did 295lbs x 3 🙂

it's just fun now to try and work towards goals.

also after sitting on my ass for 8 hours a day the last thing i want to do is go home after work and sit on my ass some more.

Nice work on the bench. How are you other lifts coming along?

everything is steadily increasing. i still can't do squats, OH presses, or deadlifts due to my 2 bulging discs in my lower back so I try to do other exercises that compensate for them (other than deadlifts, can't really do that).

I almost hit my goal on dumbell presses of 3 sets of 85lbs x 8. last week was the first time I started with 85lbs for my first set and did 8,7,6.

For my primary legs exercise I'm using the hack squat sled machine. I don't really have a goal here, but I started w/3 45lb plates on each side and have been doing 5x5 on these, and yesterday I did 5x5 of 4 45lb plates + a 5lb plate on each side, so next week I have to increase 5lb on each side again.

Straightbar curls I tried doing 135lbs for the first time last week and did 4 of them, with a little cheat on my last rep. So I'm closing in on my goal of doing 6-8 of those.

Back I don't really have any major goal for simply because I can't do deadlifts or bent over barbell rows. I've been using the T-bar and doing pullups as well, and my pullups are getting better as well. I'm going up in reps and also gaining weight so I'm gaining some kind of strength heh. I also keep telling myself I'm going to get a dip belt for pullups and dips but keep putting it off.

My traps I haven't really been going up in strength much simply because I've been having my disc pains when doing them the past few weeks due to doing upright rows beforehand, so the past 3 weeks I cut out upright rows and have steadily increased my barbell shrugs.

And my closegrip bench (primary tricep exercise) has increase steadily to 205 - 215lbs and I'm going about 8-6 reps w/that weight, and I was doing 185lbs about a month ago.

So I'm continuing to progress. I just hope that when I lean up this spring that I don't lose much of my size like I did last year.

Looks like some pretty damn nice progress. How did you get budging discs in your back?

doing squats wrong a couple years ago. i didn't even get it checked out for over a year since it initially happened because i thought it would heal itself, then i would try deadlifts or squats again and reactivate it. but i finally got it checked out and it's 2 discs in my lumbar.

Wow nice job! For some reason my bench press sucks (155 lbs is my work set) but I'm getting close to 300 with squat (work set is 275). Hopefully I can join you soon in the 300s club!

my bench had ALWAYS been my weakest exercise proportionally to the rest of my exercises. i always attributed it to me having long monkey arms, which i still think has something to do w/it because i have a long way to push the weight. it also had to do w/me not initially bringing the bar all the way down to my chest to get the full ROM, as well as how wide i put my hands on the bar.

until i started doing the full ROM and got the right balance of chest and triceps w/the widness of my grip, i was not really seeing improvements in my bench at all. well that and i started to eat more and train properly overall heh (was overtraining and under eating for years).
