Glad everything worked out for you.

My work would've fired us for doing what you did. We're not allowed to follow the person out of the store; also not allowed to leave the store to try to get the person's license plate. Doing so can and will usually result in being termed. The only person authorized to do the above or detain someone is LP or an ASM or SM specifically trained for apprehensions.

Where do you work? I've heard of policies against trying to follow them etc, but to fire you over it is nuts

Home Depot.

That's a link to the most recent story. 4 people fired over it.

I guess I'll start shopping at lowes.

All big box stores will have a similar policy. The only thing that may vary in stores are number of LPs and/or individuals trained and allowed to question and apprehend suspected shoplifters.

If you want to screw with lowly wage slaves, go to walmart and buy an expensive item using the self checkout. Don't bag it or anything and just walk out the door. When asked for a receipt reply back asking them if they are accusing you of steal and watch them run away.

toys r us also has a very strict policy regarding theft. if the actual theft is not seen or sight of the thief is lost for even a second there is nothing anyone can do. also only a manager can actually approach a thief. i always wanted to tackle them with a few fellow employees.

the most common theft was returning or exchanging used items, even bikes.
