I was talking to a guy today that was crazy about using old engine oil for fuel in his truck. is that possible? if it was that easy you would think everybody would just save their oil and put it back in their tank. just wondering if this is true or not. would love to hear your thoughts.

I think that it's possible if the engine is diesel and you filter the used oil. I have heard that people have run their lister diesel engine on used motor oil--but it's not an automotive diesel engine.

Those old army trucks were mixed fuel - does that mean basically anything that'll burn? I've seen them pop up on craigslist, with the seller saying you can burn diesel / gasoline / kerosene / farts / rainbows / everything in those engines.

That's pretty much it. Alcohol, kerosene, C17, diesel, gas, used cooking oil, etc..

Fun fact: if a two cycle diesel has an oil leak in the right spot, it becomes rather difficult to shut down since the fuel is provided by the oil and ignition provided by the compression and heat, and there is no throttle blades.


...I know a guy who has had to run from a room at least once while working on some. The standard procedure was that a guy would stand by with a blanket, shove it into the intake and everyone would run. He even had an incident where he threw a clipboard on it but it sucked a hole into the clipboard, if it were a book it would've worked.

So yes, an engine can run on used motor oil.

I'm working on an engine that runs from human stupidity, because as long as there's at least one person on the planet, they're going to do something stupid on a fairly regular basis.

Hmm, what's a diesel crankcase hold, 2 gallons of oil.
Change it every, say, 6000 miles.
Truck gets 22MPG.

It can burn it all, just not efficiently or cleanly
kinda like the saying, Jack of all trades, master of none

The are multi-fuel engines. Diesel, heating oil, jet fuel (which is basically kerosene)

I don't know about used motor oil, but I guess it's possible.

Many military engines are multi-fuel, like the turbine in the Abrams tank. It's power output varies though, depending on the fuel you use.
