I heard jump roping was a VERY good exercise, better than running. Is this true?

Ok, so my uncle who lifts weights and such says jump roping is one of the best workouts you can do and i do believe him, but i wanna know what you guys think.

Does it promote a full body workout?

Can it help you get abs?

What muscle groups does it isolate and workout?

Any feedback is apprecaited.

It will help tone your legs though, and it will give you a little strength, not nearly as much as weights though.

Unless you put lead weights around your legs and do jump rope! :D

Boxers jump rope for two reasons. Stamina training (aerobic) and rhythm.

LOL! That's a movie. Jump rope helps a boxer's foot speed, nothing else.

jump rope helps build stamina and endurance. and slight leg strength, maybe a little more than running. in track, we jump rope for feet coordination and speed, but running is still better for endurance.

Give it a go. It's exceedingly hard. I'm quite fit and i'm not nearly fit enough to make a meaningful workout with jumping rope.

I remember when I was in high school I would jump rope to lose weight and get in shape for wrestling. I would just use my 8-bit Nintendo controller cord rather than purchase a real jump rope. If you screwed up, that cord friggin' hurt, so I had motivation to keep my rhythm and pace up, otherwise I was in for it.

Jumping rope is a very good aerobic exercise. I believe when I went through Master Fitness school for the Army, they gave us a listing of the most calorie burning exercises and I believe jump rope was in the top 5. I know that wrestling/grappling was #1 followed by rowing at #2. I always get on the rowing machine due to bad knee and it gives me a hell of a work out. Jump rope is always my warm up session at the beginning of the workout.
