I hearby delcare R520 a massive failure!

X1800XT
Performance: Takes the crown. But nVidia has Forceware 8X.XX and who knows what else.
Avialability: Not available. ATI FAILED!
Value: I can buy a 7800GTX NOW for less $$$ than the XT WILL cost.

X1800XL
Performance: FAILED! The 7800GT performs better.
Availability. I don't see it anywhere, and we know better than to believe what ATI says.
Value: I can buy a 7800GT NOW for less $$$ than the XL WILL cost.

The long and short of it is that I will be purchasing a 7800GT to put in my new rig.

My days as a fanATIc are officially over. I'm a Canon fanboi now 😀

Oh well, both cards should perform better IMO for the prices

GTX will probably finally please me w/ the 80xx as long as it gets a legitimate 10%+ across the board

Amen to that brother, the ATI range were a massive let down indeed. You need to buy the 512MB just to get a few frames, at $100-200 difference..NO WAY..

as i understand it the x1800xl was extremely competetive with the 7800GT..at least from the hardocp benchmarks...

😕

plus you have driver improvement gain to look forward to...

Failure? Hardly. Since ATI is releasing the cards over the next month, and since the cards are competitive with what NVidia has available, this will drive prices down. We all win. 🙂

The problem is that by the time X1800XT becomes available, we'll be looking forward to the GTX refresh 90nm product

Kind of reminds me of AMD vs Intel. ATI(Intel) using clockspeed to compete with Nvidia (AMD). 520 isn't bad but it is a tad bit underwhelming. They must really be concerned about X-mas sales or they would have waited another month or so for a "hard launch." I also find it a bit disturbing that ATI has been quoted that the drivers haven't been optimized much- they've had how long to work on this?? Completely new architecture with ATI's traditional driver issues- I don't know.

according to thg, the high end gtx 'killer' card won't be out till the end of november.

all i can go is shake my head.

tone that title down man lol

i think its fair to say ATI can claim fastest product for now, but its just not fast enough to warrant moving from a 7800gtx if you already have one. and if your in the market for a new high end card then you'll ave to wait till november at the least to get a 1800xt

im a bit confused as to why the x1800xl doesnt really do anything against the 7800GT (i havent paid particular attention to spec sheets, but i thought it was just a lower clocked part?)

my take?......

*Ati well done, you have a fast product, faster on paper than the competition.....probably not noticably faster in real life.

*nvidia still have the best OGL performance

*nvidia's mid range is very much stronger IMO

*nvidia have the best value, but thats rather a moot point since 7800 has been out a while, prices have had time to drop

*ATI....no launch day availability as far as i can see, you've definately lost on that front

*ATI.....im liking your AF quality though, and your new AA quality, and your generally better IQ. hopefully this will spur nvidia on and then we can all enjoy great IQ. well done.

* if you have a 7800GTX......dont even look at the x1800xt its simply not worth it unless you can get a good second hand price for your gtx

*if you want to buy a new card, then the x1800xl which is supposedly out to buy now is pretty much matched or beaten by the 7800gt in the majority of cases......so flip a coin.

*if you want a uber high end card then chose from a large selection of currently available 7800gtx's or wait another month and hope ATI stick to their word and release the x1800xt for a good price and availability

(on that last point though, ati cant charge much more than what the 7800gtx goes for now. i mean the i wouldnt even pay an extra $50 for the x1800xt over the 7800gtx because the performance difference simply isnt worth it)

summing it up?.....bit of a let down, nice IQ boosts but overall just not very spectacular...especially that the R520 is also late to the game.

for me, overall, nvidia come out on top....theyve just been the better overall company with their engineering, marketing etc (the whole pickture not just the cards)

according to this site which i shop at regularly

OCUK

x1800xl should be here on the the 11th, but at a good £70 more than a 7800gt....not worth it

also te x1800xt is going to be a massive £470 for the 512 version and £410 for the 256. putting it well over £100 more (the 512 version) or just about £100 more (256ver) than a 7800gtx (ie normal make, not a fancy BFG job)

but the 11th isnt the 5th

Probably limited availiblity though...Not like Nvidia where literally it was impossible to be sold out of hte 7800 cards.

R520 performance is good and when it comes to image quality ATI rules...as usual. Adaptive Anti-Aliasing, Area-AF, HDR+AA, less shimmering than NV.

Yes, because the same thing has happened before. Newegg, ZZF, etc will show the anticipated date for getting a product (say the 11th in this case), and then it slips a few more days, and a few more days, etc. This happens to more than just video cards. I have seen it happen with motherboards and CPUs. It is not the retailers fault. They are just passing on what they have been told.

Let's look at the bullet points:

- YOU CAN'T BUY IT.
- Late to the party.
- Performance competitive, but nothing we haven't already seen from the GeForce 7 cards.
- YOU CAN'T BUY IT.
- It will cost more than competitive GF7 cards.
- CrossFire cards for both the X800 and X1000 series cards are nowhere to be found.
- YOU CAN'T BUY IT.

I am NOT impressed. Here's hoping ATi takes a solid knock to their bottom line to galvanize their red little butts into getting back on the ball.

I'm just not impressed. ATi had more time, a smaller fab process, much higher clockspeeds, and they end up with comparable performance, more power consumption, and non-availability at launch.

A comparable product when you had more time and more able resources speaks of poorer engineering. This whole thing just seems inelegant. I'm happy for some competition but...

otispunkmeyer: Good analysis.

At this point I've got to deem the launch a failure, but certainly not a "massive" one. The sad thing though is that the launch should have been a success based on the cards themselves. They perform just fine, nothing to be ashamed of there, would be happy to have one.

The thing that's killing this launch is the stupid hype that the ATI fanbois have been spewing for months and months about a supposed card coming out with "73 pipes clocked at eleventy-thousand Ghz that ran so fast it travelled into the future and scored 1.1 bazillion on 3d mark '09." So now what are really good cards are perceived as letdowns by the gaming community. Fanbois' fault for being such massive tools, ATI's fault for not getting the word out that they need to sit down and STFU and just let the cards come out.

Now couple this with delays and low-to-no availability and pleas to "just wait some more" after ATI's recent history of paper launches and PE (Phantom/Press Edition) hardware. Throw in the Crossfire X800 debacle for even more reason for folks to lose faith. And excpect the X1000s to sell for quite a bit more than comparable Nvidia cards for a while because of the low availability and the milking of the brand loyalists at first.

The lesson folks are probably taking from this? Don't sit around for 6 months like a chump waiting on one company to come through with rumored specs, when the other company has good hardware out at a good price now. Just because your favorite company is making you wait for their cards doesn't mean it's necessarily worth the wait.
